Hi all.
I'm on a bit of a terrain roll at the moment. Just finished up some nice hills and even nicer roads. Now thinking about rivers. As usual, I'm balancing the aesthetic with the practical reality of DBA. I've done the felt/card/balsa wood construction and that was fine, very practical but too neat. Now I want to go further.
I'm currently thinking of a modular system with a series of straight pieces of different lengths, a 30 degree bend, a 45 degree bend, a 90 degree bend and a couple of chicanes. Shallow banks to allow elements to stand (think heavy infantry on 15mm bases). Vallejo tinted water effects for the water, using it to makes the edges wobbly but play them as straight.
How do others model rivers?
Cheers
Jim

Cheers Jim Jim, I have some photos of rivers posted to the blog’s scenic section. dbagora.blogspot.com/2017/09/dba-terrain-type-arable.html dbagora.blogspot.com/2017/09/dba-terrain-type-tropical.html
Rivers have played a significant role in a number of scenarios. Battle of Auha, 291 AD dbagora.blogspot.com/2016/12/battle-of-auha-291-ad.html Battle of Leuven, 891 AD dbagora.blogspot.com/2018/07/891-ad-refighting-battle-of-leuven.html Tip – tape the underside of the river or road sections to keep them from slipping.

I think rivers help make the battlefield. Hard to think of too many historic battlefields that would be completely without them.
Robert, yours look great (as expected.)

Thanks for the replies. timurilank has inspired me to get cracking on some homemade rivers. Now to find the time...

I cut thin sections of thin plywood, modelled the banks with epoxy resin, then painted and flocked them.

A modular riverFirst I painted the parts of the river with water colours on white cardboard. Next I varnished them with model water. I needed almost the whole little bottle (125 ml).

I've done a couple of water fixtures with a base coat of metallic silver topped with a translucent greenish-blue (Liquitex Soft Body Acrylic Phthalocyanine Blue (Green Shade) to be exact.) UPC 0 94376 92526 5 if you're looking for it.

Timurilank, links are cool. Lot of varied terrain. Brian Boru, I liked the painted rivers. At that point I thought, "be good to copy and print these" for instant long rivers, which I suppose could be stuck to various surfaces to make less fragile. THEN GUNK !!! Wow, First thought, "I hope these become translucent!" (as they looked like snow or ice formations for my Baltic Prussians!!) I hope this isnt how they ended with all that lovely paintwork hidden!! jdesmond, your idea is good and I have seen it work well and even bought some like that as it gave a glassy / reflective look. Yes I do like to mess with rivers, my own and buying others good ideas too. Of course they never all look right together !! CarlL

CarlL Hi CarlL, yes, they will become translucent, but it takes a very long time. I put the model water on them 32 hours ago and it has not dried yet. I made the surface very thick hoping that they become slightly heavier and will lie better on the ground. Copy and print – too late, sorry. I cut them into smaller parts. But when they have dried we'll see ... Cheers, Brian

Best wishes, Brian. I hope it dries clear for you. For reference of me (and others) does the model water allow for several coats that can be overlaid?
I suppose its hard to find a 'backing' that doesnt warp. CarlL

And the result This sky blue colour seems a little bit too light. Next time when I model a waterway it will be much darker.

Wow, Brian. That's an amazing transition.
If you have a clear blue sky and 'clean' water it would look like this from distance, Brian. So I have some a similar if deeper blue (to represent deeper water).
However if river is in spate after heavy rains it would reflect colours of soil or rocks its passed over or through.
I once visited Roman Ribchester and River Ribble was a deep red brown after heavy rains so this influenced my next river which became red brown too!! (Not good if wanting to link to my blues!)

Right now I've found another easy way to build miles of rivers for battlefields. A small children's toy (a seaplane model) by GOKI comes along with 5 m (!) selfadhesive printed tape in the shape of a river, 5cm wide. I mounted it on cardboard...
