This is an interesting presentation from the National Army Museum (UK) that covers the practice of side changing and the role of treachery during the period of the English Civil War. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePowwvaWtD0&index=9&list=PLevPCd1trgVVqZywkNqggqrCcQuQ72dsE&t=598s Listening to this lecture, such troops could be classed as ‘allies’ with the same movement conditions and if involved in a campaign these could conceivably slip away during the night to march back home. This would be a better option than changing sides during a battle only to find your troops on the losing side.
