The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons have been finished a week ago and I have been searching various manufactures for a Welsh army; these are the warband (3Wb) type and most likely bare-legged, knee length tunic, carrying a round shield and armed with spear or javelin.
I know Black Hat offer Welsh and Donnington do Welsh, but these have trousers. Essex has Welsh spearmen and javelinmen that might do. The Welsh offered by Museum Miniatures are more suited for the ‘b’ or ‘c’ list. Forged in Battle offer Atecotti and Caledonian warband, but I am not sure if square shields were used by the Welsh.
Are there any that I may have overlooked? Would prefer a manufacturer on this side of the pond (Europe).

W&E are also going to produce some Welsh figures following their most recent Kickstarter, but probably not until early next year. I used the Essex figures for my III/19a and am happy with the look of them.

Thank you Goragrad, Haardrada and Menacussecundus, There are some good suggestions here. The W&E Scots Irish levy and warriors would make an animated looking warband. I may be mistaken, but were not round shields the fashion at this time.

Timurilank,
Another big vote for the Alternative Armies Medus Range (agreeing with Goragrad) and the ME8a Welsh Long Spear and Shield - a beautiful figure.....as is their ME8 Welsh Longbow man. Slightly constrained with poses with this range but for the Welsh, well crafted, stocky and durable miniatures that take paint very well. Oh and the archer is bear foot but the spearman is wearing breeches although it is easy to paint this as bear legged. You may need to drill out the telegraph pole spears and replace with wire. I looked a Essex for this army and well.......meh! Alternative Armies however had something more to them....might jut be me!
However, the real difficulty I found with this range for the Welsh is the cavalry....but I think I've solved it. Use MEC21 13thC Sergeant, dremmel off the heater shield and replace with an Essex Dark ages round shield - 3 of these for the cavalry general or mix in a MEC4 Frankish Knight 13thC for Owain Glyndŵr. That's my plan at least and the one test figure I've done looks good. If you are interested I'll photograph and post.
I recently did a Alternative Armies order - it took a few weeks but arrived OK and was correct in all respects. Post free over £80 and you can but individual figures so you only pay for what you need - always a bonus!
I might have to bump this army to the top of the painting list if there is competition with you and/or Goragrad to field the first Welsh are army of 2018.

Cavalry are the indeed the question Paddy. One of the reasons I haven't yet proceeded with the armies.
In their Welsh line all Essex has is lights and Alternative has nothing specifically Welsh.
I do have 6 of those MEC21s though. I'll have to look at that option.
With Alternative's sale on HOTT armies this week (10 percent off) it is tempting to pick up a couple and throw some more Welsh in the order (BBDBA)...

Feudal Castings had a very good Welsh range, well suited to the early warband-heavy army you’re planning. They went to Sgt Major Miniatures (?) , Stateside, but last I heard the whole collection of moulds was up for sale. The Essex look OK, and have seen a couple of that particular army in the flesh, but haven’t seen the Lancashire Games models.
Martin (....and yes, round shields are appropriate).

A quick question about Welsh and trousers. Is your preference for figures with bare legs historical or just personal choice?
I am thinking of painting a Welsh III/19b and was happy enough with the Black Hat figures for a number of reasons. But haven't done any real research, so interested in why you're opting for bared legged Welshmen.
Cheers,
Peter Spitz

Peter,
My preference for bare-legged types stems from the large collection of Book II and III armies, which together with the other two books must well have passed the 100 mark. In short, they will make a nice change from the trouser, tunic and round shield already in the collection.

Armies of the Feudal Europe (Heath) is a good resource, and also mentions in the DBM lists. Yes, tunic, bare legged, some suggestions of barefoot or single shoe (for grip), roundshields and javelins in the earlier period. Moustaches but no beards. (the Feudal Castings were ideal in that respect). M

Martin, Thank you for the I. Heath description. Unfortunately, Feudal Castings were bought by Sgt. Major Miniatures who are located in the US. That would make them less appealing due to delivery and import duty to the Netherlands.
