Played a few games with Atillathenun last night - made a huge blunder in the first game and repeated it in the second. So I'm in good shape for tomorrow... we both plan to attend.

Can't make it this time - visit from first and only grandchild. Pity, the army choice looks fascinating.

Some outcomes
• A good turnout, something like 10 or 12 • Not a wide selection of armies • Lots of littoral landings • Finalists were Martin Smith with Sea Peoples and Claudius Gothicus with Sea Peoples. Two lines crashed across the middle of the board. Claudius threw 5s and 6s and Martin didn’t. • Atillathenun forgot the trophy, an alternative was procured and so the presentation photo will be a bit odd • Claudius declined the winners’ prize army and got some kind of discount deal on future appearances - celebrities! He'll be getting an agent next. • Personally, I suffered two draws and upset Bill with a sneaky trick... made worse because he had just reminded me about something important I had forgotten! But it was a good trick – worthy of Mr Smith!
Looking forward to The Alton Matched Pairs in two weeks. Always a great challenge and a prize table to drool over.

Oh and congratulations to Claudius, who beat me in the opening game after we had destroyed each others generals.

Thanks to all at PAWS for another afternoon of DBA mayhem.
It was twelfth time lucky for me with the Sea Peoples as I finally found an army from the PAWS list that could win a battle. Much to my surprise a number of others had reached the same conclusion (that the Sea People's were potentially a rather good army) at considerably greater speed than I had done.
As ever the games were something of a blur all I can recall is that on crucial occasions the dice seemed to show some very high numbers. Every game was very close with some hair raising (appropriate given the Sea People seemed to go in for some rather fancy head gear) endings.
Success largely due to a rather fetching combination of purple and white dice used al la Mr Smith fashion.
The two littoral landings I made seemed to work out quite successfully which is not often the case under 3.0. I also picked up a few tips about rivers from Arnaud first of which is the usual one, avoid them!
Looking at possibilities from Book 2 for the next completion at PAWS. Meanwhile selecting two unsuitable armies to use at Alton in a couple of weeks time, much fun for all.

Six fun games of DBA v3 at the Portsmouth PAWS DBA on Saturday. Theme was 13th C BC, and I used Sea Peoples, curse of the civilisations of the eastern Med.... 1) vs Oli’s Shang Chinese. He invaded, and my ‘tactics’ involved a headlong assault on his line. Peleset swordsmen successfully targeted his archers, and caused a ripple of disaster as holes appeared in the Shang array, giving a 5-0 Sea Peoples win.
2) next was an invasion by my bunch vs Phil Barrington’s Sea Peoples, who landed javelinmen behind my lines. These I attacked with swordsmen, who quickly pushed them back into the sea. However, the distraction left my army in some disarray, as the remainder of Phil’s force bore down. His counterattack left me three elements down, but I just scraped a single extra ‘kill’ for the win....4-3 but very, VERY close.
3) the Sea Peoples then invaded Terry Ellis’s NK Egypt, smiting two bow elements, a skirmisher and a chariot unit for a 4-1 win. (Pharaoh will be carving a few more reliefs of these nasty maritime warriors, no doubt.....).
4) we invaded the Chinese Border Nomads of Steve Aspinall....lotsa warbands, which if lucky could shred my ‘blades’. Luck was not on Steve’s side, however, and the Sea warriors counter attacked his warband block for a 4+general-1 win.
5) now we attacked Mark Skelton’s Early Mycenaeans (or Minoans...). His heavy chariots landed on my flank and destroyed three blade elements. My amphibious counter-landing bottled the chariots up, and it went 3-3....... Redeployment proved problematic, as the main body of Greek pikemen bore down on my scattered warriors, and the Mycenaean charioteer general ran down a Sea Peoples swordsmen element to claim a close victory (3-4).
6) Now on to the final, where we faced a rival band of Sea Peeps under Richard Pulley. No-one took to their boats, the opposing warriors clashed, and a few enemy javelinmen were cut down, but luck went against my brave boys, and we went down 2-4 to the mighty and worthy winner of the Spring PAWS, RP.
A fun day out, and some challenging games. Thanks to the PAWS club for organising.
