I'm not sure that all fast troops should be able to interpenetrate at will. Historically, skirmishers (Ps) and some mounted (LH+/-Cav) seemed to be the troops that could interpenetrate relatively easily. I think PB got this one right.

I think there is some evolution available for terrain and deployment in DBA3. The medieval deployment of three "battles" (divisions if you like) is not seen in DBA3 until after they have deployed into line. However the "big" medieval battles have a smaller number of combatants than the "big" ancient battles. Without a strict scale, it is difficult to model both situations. The collision course variant rules help to rectify this issue as the armies arrive in parts. It would be nice to have a way to decide if the battle is set piece (current rules), meeting engagement (collision course) or ambush. Let's see what DBF brings to the table...

That links to DBA 2.2+ not DBA 2.2. It think it incorporates the unofficial amendments from that group before they developed Triumph. I suspect Light Spears is one of those amendments. Jim I thought the same thing too, Jim. Then I checked my copy of the 2.2 rules and found that 3Sp was a thing, although I don't think they functioned any differently from 4Sp. Most seem to have been re-badged as 3Pk in v3. Maybe that's it. You could base Spears 3 or 4 but they functioned the same. Whereas it seems that 2.2+ had different rules for 3Sp and 4Sp, at least that's what is written on page 5 of that guide. I never played 2.2+. I can't remember where my DBA 2.2 rules are, it's been so long! Jim

Sounds like a prototype for a new war/board game.

Firstly, welcome to Fanaticus! Secondly, what a fabulous concept! Looking forward to seeing more scenarios. It is wonderful to see DBA3 used for historical scenarios with only the minimal changes to the rules and it will also help "evolve" the game by showcasing these tweaks.

Oh, I forgot to mention something. The defender places all terrain, but must alternate each placement, i.e. first a defender’s piece, then an invader’s piece, and so on. This prevents defender’s from placing all their terrain first, in the hope that there will be no room left for the invader’s terrain. Tweaking the terrain system to give the invader more scope to affect the battlefield seems very intuitive in order to balance games. I assume that humans haven't changed that much over the millennia and therefore the ancients didn't have a deathwish, so when they stood in battle they had some hope in their own minds of surviving (and perhaps winning but that was more important to the leaders ). Cheers Jim

Individual SpeedPaints in the 2.0 range went on sale this week. I’ve loved the ‘browns’ so far for speeding up the painting of belts, boots, backs of shields, hair and even horses 🐎, without losing the quality look I’m after. So, I have gone and purchased all their new expanded range that cover the ‘ochre-brown-black’ elements, plus a few others of the darker tones, such as one from the new skin range, totalling around 10 new pots. Finally, I’ve invested in four of the metallics, to cover gold, bronze and silver, and will be interested to see how these work on armour and weapons…. Will they be good enough to do away with the current 3 stage ‘block, wash and highlights’ technique without a loss in quality…? Block/Wash/Highlight? That's expert level, particularly for 15s. I just Block and Wash. But I've found I still wash after Speedpaint on most occasions to increase the depth of shading. Still enjoy the Speedpaint for its... speed. Most of the warm colors are excellent. If using Speedpaint 1.0 you need to let it dry, dry, dry before washing. Mine sit overnight. That minimizes the chance of reactivation. If you're lucky, you get a tiny amount of reactivation allowing for a tiny thinning of the Speedpaint color on the raised bits to give a free highlight! Cheers Jim
