A regular wargaming opponent, while being new to DBA, was keen to try his hand with a different army. What better way to try than deploy my recently completed Iberians against some Carthaginian veterans. Particularly so following the defeat of the Iberians at the hand of the Romans. Once the terrain was placed and the miniatures deployed, battle commenced. A brief summary of the games, as well as additional photos, can be found here: ancientwargaming.wordpress.com/2024/07/14/ancient-iberians-in-dba/

Friday provided an opportunity for a 15mm DBA evening as 8 players gathered in my games room to seek glory on the battlefield. Upwards of 14 excellent games played stretching from the Hittites to the Seleucids. A few photos of a selection of games can be found here: ancientwargaming.wordpress.com/2024/07/28/hittites-to-seleucids/

Friday evening provided an oppurtunity for an outing for my recently completed Iberians. Opposite a new player to DBA formed up the well trained ranks of Romans. Nominally set in 196 BC Quintus Minucius Thermus sought battle with the Iberians under Budares. The result balanced on a knife edge. A report, as well as a few more photos, can be found here: ancientwargaming.wordpress.com/2024/07/21/rebellion-in-hispania/

Frustrated by border raids Edward IV dispatched an expedition to stop the repeated incursions by the Scots under Duke of Norfolk. The English deployed with their archers on the flanks and their billmen and gunnes in the centre. The Scots however pressed their infantry forward, despite the English artillery. The Scots infantry fought determinedly while the English, despite their valour, were forced back all while their archers on the left flank were unable to advance. The situation deteriorated further when the English mounted under Norfolk were broken by a hail of Scots archery. Alas, the English had been soundly defeated by Scots.

Keith, it's always nice to read a new DBA report. A nice mix of armies from the extremities of the army lists. Cheers, Thanks Greg. The Japanese were engaged earlier in the week, but a busy week prevented a game summary.

Some great looking armies there. Thanks. Unfortunately I didn’t get photos of some of the other games.

Friday provided an opportunity for an evening of 15mm DBA with five players in attendance. The armies deployed were Wars of the Roses English (Yorkist), Wars of the Roses (Tudor Rebel), Medieval French (two flavours), New Kingdom Egyptian, Later Hebrew, Early Mycenaean. The games played were: Wars of the Roses (Yorkist) vs Medieval French. The massed French cannon were perpetual problem for the English. Despite some disorder among the French they finally secured victory. Early Mycenaean vs Later Hebrew with victory being secured by the Hebrew. The steep hills provided caused significant issues for the Mycenaeans resulting in victory for the Hebrew. Here, the Hebrew advance. Wars of the Roses (Tudor Rebel) vs Medieval French. Little is known of this battle though Tudor poets, as always, speak of valour of the Pretender Henry. French sources in contrast remain quiet on detail, though acknowledge defeat. Later Hebrew vs New Kingdom Egyptian. Emboldened by recent victory the Hebrew advanced rapidly across the open plain driving back the Egyptian right. Interestingly the Pharaoh showed no will to fight. However in the centre the Hebrew warriors were cutdown mercilessly, resulting in an Egyptian victory. Below, the attack on the Egyptian right. Wars of the Roses English (Yorkist) vs Wars of the Roses (Tudor Rebel). The Pretender Henry, his ranks swollen with mercenary French pikemen, advanced across the field and were subjected to massed archery and cannon fire from the resolute Yorkists. Eventually with casualties mounting the Rebels were attacked from the flank and soon collapsed in rout. No doubt the Pretender will be safely back in France plotting his next adventure. An enjoyable evening of DBA.

Yet another triump to be celebrated in Rome! Nice report Keith. , Rome’s victory was hollow at best. The Polybian centre (smallest command) was one stand from being demoralised, and the Gauls are massed for a push in the second photo above. The Roman right was just two stands from being demoralised. The Gauls were very near to victory. I’m pleased that people are enjoying the game summaries.

BBDBA this evening. Concerned by the growing threat from the north Rome dispatched a consular army to arrest the advance of a confederation of tribes from Cisalpine Gaul. The armies deployed with a series of rocky hills on the Roman right. The massed Gallic host deployed in deep ranks and despite difficult terrain on their left placed the bulk of the cavalry on their left. Clearly they intended to move quickly around the rocky hills to threaten the Roman right. The Gallic attack focussed on centre and left where the warriors moved forward against the Roman centre & right. Their attacks causing heavy casualties on the Roman front line. Yet Roman resolve held, the breakthroughs that occurred in several places were now held by the Roman second line. The battle now swung back and forth as both armies became disordered and casualties slowly mounted. However, it was the Gallic left that collapsed first and as it did disorder spread through the Gallic lines. Victory, though narrow, was with Rome.

Nice looking Anglo-Norman camp Keith. Cheers, Yes, I think Andy made a good job of it. He is a good painter as well in my opinion. His miniatures have come up well.

Keith: New camp? I haven't seem that one before... at least that I can remember. Hi Joe, The Norse-Irish & Anglo-Normans, as well as the associated camps, belong to another player. The same for the Persians.
