I have Old Glory 15mm Romano-brits in the pile to be painted... Not sure what Essex code would work but I'm sure they will have a late roman/dark age fig or two which would work

Thanks for the help. I do need Essex. I ordered a ready made King Arthur army from Essex, DBA 3 Book 2 81a. All nice figures but when I got down to actually painting them, I found that the Spearmen were actually Saxon Warband -- SXA4. Not only do they not look like Romano-British pedyt, some have axes. They should have oval shields. So, I need to ask Essex to trade these for something appropriate. What is the best? Thanks Options here www.essexminiatures.co.uk/pages/15mm-ancients

Hi Bob,
I love Essex Figures (also I am from said county). I had a similar issue with looking for a Sub-Roman Stathclyde Army (II/81d). Again the figures proposed were for the Spears a combination of Welsh and those Saxons you mentioned - did not feel right.
I put a thread on the Building Armies section recently.
Responders suggested those companies with specific lines like Splintered Light and even the Old Glory 15s and use a combination of the Slav and Rus spear figures.
Maybe the late roman auxiliary figures could work best with oval shield styles. Cannot think of any of the Dark Age related ones that I had purchased recently from Essex with Ovals.
That is one of the few issues with Essex, ie whilst the figures are good and decent value, and they try and cover all DBA 3.0 armies, there are some like Sub Roman, that they try and shoe horn not quite right figures into.....and maybe they should avoid trying to cover these ones?

Salutations, Simon, and y'all !
Methinks Syr Hobbs - syrhobbswargames.com - sold out of their Outpost stock last summer (I got good deals on the last figures in a couple of ranges).
Oneovdezedaze will send an order to Scotland, but probably not for a while. Really like their figures. (Maybe get rest of a Khmer army to go with the Maiden Guards ;-) )

I also ran into this Essex problem. And now I carefully look at the sets they offer for their armies. For the Romano-British pedyt, I finally settled on Dacian. They have flat oval shields and they are bearded.

Look very reasonable - innovative solution. Maybe a recommendation to Essex to Modify their Sub- Roman List?

That's spearmen on the basis of the Essex Dacian.

Is it just me or is the "P" on the Chi Rho symbol facing the wrong way?
Cheers,

Not just you Gregorius...
As to the suggestion for OG15, their Romano-Brit infantry are a mix of their LIR legionaries and Auxilia Palatina.
Same would work then from Essex (I had noted the Saxons in the Arthurian pack as well and shook my head when one was for sale in the TMP marketplace). Using the Dacians is also a decent substitute.
I actually ordered from Outpost to fill in some of the gaps in the figures I got from the Syr Hobbs clearance. Fairly quick turnaround and excellent service. There was a miscount on one of the sets of figures and when I informed them about it the rest of the figures were on the way in a coule of days and I had them in about a week.
