Oh…I see…my fault again for misunderstanding you Bluestone28. You are quite right…as you’ve already got the 1 ‘free’ PIP at the start of your bound, you only need to draw 1 ‘chit’ from the bag to get another 1 PIP to make the total 2 PIP’s. Green ‘chits’ = PIP’s. By the way, since some (but not all) of my friends think my earlier ‘make two orders to avoid PIP wastage’ is too complicated, I have (reluctantly) given in to peer pressure and abandoned it. They prefer it to be if you issue a 2 PIP order, but are unable to raise the 2 PIP’s, the order is obviously cancelled, and the single PIP actually raised (if any) can be used to make a 1 PIP move of your choice. Think of it like this:- The General says: “Damn! That complicated 2 PIP order has to go to several units, so needs 2 couriers, but not enough have returned and only one is currently available. Oh well, cancel the 2 PIP order and use the single courier I do have to send a simple 1 PIP order to so-and-so over there instead.” (In other words, each green ‘chit’ represents a courier or messenger. A red ‘chit’ means none are available) Actually, this can sometimes be advantageous. Usually you have to announce your moves in advance before drawing ‘chits’/courier-messengers. When a 2 PIP order is cancelled due to a lack of PIP’s/’chits’/couriers, General’s can make a decision ‘on-the-spur-of-the-moment’ to use the any spare PIP they do have on an element or group that they haven’t announced beforehand. They don’t get to make the 2 PIP move that they wanted…but at least the 1 PIP isn’t wasted.

and yes this new home rule is very interesting! It bring some "war realism" pressure to the poor general, and makes important orders first, changing completly the tactical thing! a nice addition (and i'll have some difficulties to return back to the normal rules after that! i also like the cup-like rolling dice, it's less noisy and bring some more suspense to the combat results (and no more "wrong dice" or dice-breaking figs syndrom )

... Actually, this can sometimes be advantageous. Usually you have to announce your moves in advance before drawing ‘chits’/courier-messengers. They don’t get to make the 2 PIP move that they wanted…but at least the 1 PIP isn’t wasted. I just think of "middle" alternative : the 2 tokens are drawn one after the other : if the first one is green and the second is red, the player got only 1 PIP and he can use it on another unit (whose movement costs only 1), if the first token drawn is red, the player loose the 2 PIPs, so the order/move phase stop here. Of course at the begining of his turn, as the first pip is free, he still have one order even if the token drawn is red. (so it's better for the player to try to move the 2 Pips unit at the begining of his turn!) (Sorry Tony to hijack your topic again! )

An alternative, more suitable for solo games (and for those with sensitive hearing!), is to have 6 plastic/cardboard ‘chits’ in a bag, 5 of them green and 1 red, drawn one-at-a-time:- * Players announce the move they wish to make (indicating that an order has been dispatched)… * The first PIP each bound is free, and no 'chit' is drawn. Other subsequent orders requires the drawing of 'chits'... * A green 'chit' gives 1 PIP and more 'chits' may still be drawn (showing the order has been received and acted upon)... * A red 'chit' gives no PIP and no more draws (showing that the order didn't arrive, and must have got lost in the post!)... * To make a 2 PIP move, two ‘chits’ will need to be drawn, one-at-a-time, neither of them being red… * Drawn ‘chits’ only go back in the bag if a red is drawn, or if the player has finished moving… (The defending player rolls an extra 'Weather Dice' before their first bound. A roll of '1' means Plough becomes Rough, and the defender cannot draw more 'chits' that bound....see fanaticus.boards.net/post/3886/%C2%A0 )
Whichever method is used, this is a wonderful House Rule, and it really makes playing feel as if you are in command issuing orders to an army, instead of merely being in a game where you roll say 3 or 4 PIP’s then decide which elements or groups to move, knowing the amount in advance. I highly recommend this ‘Blind General’ system and thank Tony for bringing it to our attention. 👍 I've been following the Blind General system for a couple of weeks now but only just got around to some solo games and try it out. It works really well with DBA solo rules and adds some ingenious suspense to to both sides of the battle. For the solo side it's best to have an idea of a battle plan even if very basic. This system deserves a place of honour in the House Rules section. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention Tony.
