More a Viking colony, without all those nubile blonde Viking Valkyries. William the Bastard was known as a Viking type at the time. But it does give us a good reason to hate the French.

David Constable I might be out-numbered here but I quite like them.According to my mum I'm of Norman descent from here side of the Family and Norse from my Fathers side.My Christian names are both of French origin and supposed to have been passed on down the Family for generations.Aside from that the French have had a bit of bad press over here mainly from the Hundred Years War onwards...maybe we are just sore losers.lol I laugh when I hear people cheer on about Richard the Lionheart who was more French than English!😁

I quite like them too as I'm french Antoine, Just curious, do you consider the Normans to actually have been French at the time of the Battle of Hastings? There is perhaps an argument that although they live in what is now part of France they were then actually a separate nation and also a bit prone to fight with the actual French of the time. As I say, I'm just curious. Scott

they were "francised" or "frankised" northmen in my opinion, which is more french than english ;P But they were for sure the reason for centuries of war between the British and us. Moreover, I think that at the time there was no such thing as french or english: there were Franks, Britons, Danes, Saxons, etc. Our national feelings are quite recent. And I'm an open guy : my sister in law is British

Scott So Viking Normans (i.e. North men) led by a bastard invaded Kent (the south of England) from the south to fight and win a Battle against Anglo-Saxons from Denmark and Germany, who had just defeated the real Viking invasion in the North at the home of Chelsea Football Club....and that is why the English hate the French? There is only one country in the world where that would make any sense!

Having repeatedly defeated the Scots, at Union we adopted the Scots flag colour as the Ground colour of the Union flag (oldest Kingdom).
South Africa we fought against a people trying to get their freedom, then effectively gave them the country after we won.
I once read a book about countries where we had fought, and the very few we did not.

And a great book that was (I think it was called "All the Countries We've Invaded: and A few we never got around to" - I read it last year - very entertaining
It did leave out Iran/Persia however. Later that year at the Lifeline Book Fair I picked up an old book about the Anglo Persian war which was also quite interesting
Cheers

I was reminded by a neighbour that about eight years ago (from her memory) that a French group of actors did a play about the 100 years war in Pershore or Evesham, they were shaken by the fact that whenever the French appeared the audience booed, when the English appeared they cheered, it did not happen in France.
We used to have an old lady who on armistice day would burn a paper tricolour at the war memorial, she lost a grandson at Dunkirk, and blamed the French, not the Germans who had killed him.
The anti French and German feeling in this country is stronger and deeper routed than a lot of people realise, especially I think amongst the over 50s/60s.

I was thinking about redoing my WotR army, this led me to three of my four grandparents originated we think in the Yorkshire/Lancashire areas.
To add to that it led on to cricket, I seem to remember that at one time the Yorkshire cricket club would only use players born? in Yorkshire. This caused more than one problem over whether a player came from Yorkshire or Lancashire.

If he does, he will tell you without asking. If he does not, why humiliate him?'" Still very true to this day... Oh and yes another Yorkshireman.
