Nice looking army Paddy. And the 20 year old paint job holds up nicely. With your first game it shouldn't have finished with the General dying. Unlike previous editions, in 3.0 the game continues until the equivalent of 4 elements are lost. Something to remember for next time.
Cheers,

Thanks. I hadn't picked up on that change between DBA 3.0 and previous versions. Every day is a school day! I reality we were probably playing a lot of half remembered DBA 1.0 but with DBA 3.0 army lists. We'll get better the more games we play and the more of Tony's videos I watch!
Actually that makes a whole lot of sense - although losing Alexander in Bound 2 was so stupid that I don't think I could have recovered given the +1 PIP cost of moving anything on top of the 2 points lost.
Thanks.
Paddy

Paddy would making Hypaspits Fast Spear help/solve problem?
MA: 3 BW; CF 4 (but no Shieldwall side support); can move through Difficult/Rough at normal MA (but fight at -2).

So how exactly do you get the board to let you post pictures?

TomT IMHO Fast Spear would be a better classification for Hypaspists than 4Ax. Their primary function was as the pivot between th Phalanx and the cavalry - I take this to mean that they acted to ensure that the phalanx and the cavalry didn't get overlapped and suffer a -1. However, when actually using then in this role their 4Ax stats mean they are the first unit to be lost and the -1s happen anyway! Hence they need to have "stickability" in both GG and BG terrain. I agree (based on limit knowledge of ancients) that Fast Spear seems the better choice. Still a bit concerned because in Difficult (though not Rough) they drop -2 in combat. Would they have stayed out of Woods with long spears? As a stop gap though Fast Spear seems much better.
Though Fast Spear does not exist in DBA 3.0 it does exist in D3H2 (almost all types have a Fast version - so you can have Fast Knights (Companions?)) So for games at home with your some I suggest using D3H2 rather than have Hypaspists frustration...

You sort of need a hybrid that is Fast Spear in GG and Aux in BG to capture the Hypaspists well.....agree that they weren't Bd - unless in siege situations.
One area where DBA 3.0 gets it right over 1.0 (the only other version I am familiar with) is that the +1 for flank support make Sp far more useful even if in a match up against 2 ranks of Pk then eventually get pulled out of formation and defeated.

Agree that Side Support (Shieldwall) is a great addition to DBX mechanics (and I stupidly initally opposed it - even I suffer from rule inercia).
For playing at home I strongly recommend using D3H2 - you can at least get Fast Spear as a stop gap improvement for Hypaspists.
