Well done, Martin. Nice work. All those flags...very impressive. And splendid work on the bases too; they look great.

Martin, looking really good. I have an Dervish army and an opposing early Egyptian army, but they haven't seen much action lately. Let me know how you like the game. We always found them to be fun.

Thanks Terry and all for the kind comments. They're not to collector's standards, but look decent on the tabletop, so I'm more than happy. The Dervishes have already been used in a 'standard' Hott game or two.....all those hordes, hard to kill or win with, come to think of it....
Yes, looking forward to a few games of HotE....very different opponents in the Dervish v Anglo-Egyptians, so challenging.
I also have the earlier Egyptians all primed up. Not sure when they'll get tackled. Terry, did you go for the white summer uniform, or the blue winter one?

Hi Martin,
I went with the white uniform, but if memory serves the artillery is in blue. If there's some sun tomorrow I'll take some pics for you. The most fun to me was painting up some foot Bashi Bazooks, which I modified from some other Arab Essex figures.
Hope you enjoy HOTE as much as we do.

Quite nice!
I have a few Colonial Brits and Egyptians (a couple of packs) and a number of Fuzzy Wuzzy's and Ansar that came with other lots of minis that I have been debating as to what to do with. Some of the Sudanese would work for earlier armies, but the Colonial Brits and Egpytians obviously would not. I don't have nearly enough to get into the period in the regular fashion and buying enough is currently not what I am inclined to do.
Looking at these and considering the lesser number of figures needed for a HotE army, that might well be an option.

Nice work, Terry....thanks for posting. Are the two 40mm bases with 2 figures on each Bashi Bazouks? How do you play them (sneakers / lurkers / hordes?).
Put more paint on my own Bashi this morning....only the rifles and a wash to go.....getting there. Mine are Irregular Miniatures models, sold as some sort of Balkan or Caucasus wars range.
M
ps- your infantry look just like mine (Essex), except that YOURS have paint on them.....👍😎...one day.....

Goragard,
We've had many fun games with HOTE. Since Chris took down the old Fanaticus site where we had them, if you'll send me a PM with an email address I'll send them to you.
Martin,
Glad the pictures are of some help. The Bashi Bazooks are on a 40 x 30 base as we felt that skirmishers in the period of rifles needed to be more able to cover greater ground. I don't have my set of rules in front of me, but if I remember correctly we allowed them to play as several options, with the caveat that once you declared it that option had to remain for the entire game. For me, painting the Bashis was the most fun.

Hi all,
I only just discovered this thread. Fascinating. I have hundreds of Sudan war figures and never thought of using a HOTT game. Can somebody point me to where these HOTE rules are? Thanks much.

Jim, I believe Terry's Egyptians are Essex Miniatures. I have the same miniatures only unpainted. I was inspired after seeing Terry's army a few years ago. I plan to make two General elements, one with Ahmed Pasha and the other with Valentine Baker.
Bob, If you forward me your email address to leadbear@internode.on.net , I will send you a copy of the PDF.
I've only played a handful of games set during the Anglo-Zulu War, but I have really enjoyed them. 'Hordes Of The Empire' receives a mention in Daniel Mersey's 'A Wargamer's Guide To The Anglo-Zulu War'. He was very complimentary regarding the variant.

Yes, they are all Essex figures. The Bashis are converted from other range Ottomans if memory serves, or the one in the small cap may even be a Spanish guerrilla Peninsula War figure. I used some pics I found on the net and my old copies of S&S for creating them.
Interesting, I did not know the rules were ever mentioned anywhere.
Bob, just sent them to you in an email.
