If there is sufficient interest, I am planning to run a tournament in Bakewell on Saturday 14 October. Not sure of the format yet, but am thinking of pinching Martin Smith's matched pairs concept.
Could you private message me if you are interested, indicating whether you are highly likely to attend or just a possibility at this stage.
Thanks, Simon

Simon, if you run this it'll fall inside the SoA UK DBA League 2016-2017 year, which ends at the English Open. Might be worth alerting Bill, to get it included on the list of tournaments on the League page- portsmouthwargames.wordpress.com/society-of-ancients-uk-dba-league/league-tournaments/That'd be 14 in the season, so a great year for UK tournaments. ps- the idea for the Alton Matched Pairs was Bill's , for which I've always been very grateful. Hope you get to run the 'up North' version of Matched Pairs -ALWAYS a fun day, with plenty of variety and a string of challenges.

This will only make this year's total 13 (unless there is another I'm unaware of) because I'd always allowed for the possibility of Simon running a "Summer" tournament in Bakewell like last year.
The Matched Pairs idea was Scott Russell's. I only nagged you until you decided to run with it

I have e-mailed all the usual suspects, but if anyone is interested in attending on 14 October in Bakewell, please let me know. I will confirm details when I have a clearer idea on numbers.
Thanks

With 4 weeks to go, we have 10 players confirmed and 6 possibles for Saturday 14 October The format will be matched pairs. Bring along a pair of armies that are historical enemies as defined by the V3 army lists along with sufficient terrain to cover either army being the defender. Armies from any books I - IV can be used. Don't worry if you haven't got a matched pair of armies in your collection - just let me know and we will arrange a loan army or a pair of loan armies. As the armies are fought as matched pairs, you can use elements for both your armies based on frontages with base widths other than 40mm - just let me know beforehand if you are planning to do this so we can make sure we have the bigger tables if required. You are strongly advised to make sure that both your armies have good chance of winning as, when using your own armies, your opponent will get to choose the army unless you have already played with the same army from your pair three times. The venue will be the Medway Centre Bakewell. www.medwaycentre.co.uk/contact/First tournament game will be 1015 but I will be there from about 0830 if anyone wants a warm up game before the formal start. We should be finished by 5 pm. Do let me know if you have any questions. Simon

It looks like we will have 14 to 18 players at the Bakewell October DBAfest matched pairs tournament a week on Saturday (14 October) - but room for a few more if anyone wants to make a late entry.
Jeff from Outpost Wargame Services has kindly contributed towards a couple of DBA armies as prizes.
There will also be a bring and buy and the usual home made cakes will be provided!

A good turn out today with 14 players bringing matched pairs of armies. I will post the full results and army details in the next couple of days. In the meantime, congratulations to Paul Murgatroyd who just pipped Scott Russell to first place. Paul and Scott were equal in points and so we had to take account of the sum of opponent scores to determine the winner. It was also good to see some new faces at the event.
Cheers

Fantastic day out. If anyone is in driving range and fancies the next one I couldn't recommend it enough.
I am pretty much full of free brownie which helped.
Idea of two matched armies per player is one I am going to suggest in Barnsley as it def makes you think more.
Thanks to Simon and all who helped to organise and to those I got to play, apart from Reece who doesn't deserve thanks after wiping the floor with me

Enjoyed yesterday enormously and it was great to make a DBA tournament as a player for once. The matched pairs definitely conjures up some interesting challenges and my luck held long enough to pip Scott to the post on count back, but it could easily have been very different. Six matches, with two using my own armies of Theban v Thessalian. Having not played much DBA3 personally, I wanted my 'home' games to be as easy on the gray matter as possible βΊοΈ It was a day of two halves, as I played three of the old lags firstly, in Mark J, Scott and Phil J., followed by relative newcomers to the tournament scene in Baldie, Rob and Reece.
Game 1 v Mark J and presented with Palmyran v Sassanid Persian. I chose the Palmyran on the basis of the Kn/Bw combo and this was the decisive factor. Game 2 saw Scott select the Theban and although I managed to win on the flanks, my Sp decided to roll a series of 1's & 2's against Scott's red cube of death and my centre vanished rapidly. Game 3 against Phil J was also a home game, with me now using the Thebans. A much more cagey affair and finally, with time running out, I had an opportunity to kill his Cv general with a closed flank, but followed Phil's 1 with a 1 of my own to end with a draw. So, lunchtime arrived with 1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw.
Game 4 v Baldie and he presented an absolutely perfect matched pair in the Black Sea Greeks x 2. Sometimes civil wars can be fairly bland affairs, but the nice mix of troops, with a few terrain features, made this one of the best games of the day. The right flank ebbed and flowed, with some bizarre rolls resulting in both of us losing mounted against the odds, and then I got lucky in the middle to win the game, just as time was running out. Game 4 v Rob and it seemed obvious to pick the Persians v Midianites and, once I'd managed to avoid all the dunes and oasis he laid down on the table, set up a killing field made up of 6 Bows. The camels did their best to close to bring the Persians to hand to hand combat, but it was like watching a WW1 'over the top, lads' style slaughter. Finally, Game 6 v Reece again gave me an opportunity to choose what seemed immediately to be the stronger army in the Italian Ostrogoths v Early Byzantine match-up. A straight forward affair, getting stuck in asap, but the Bw plus Kn combo did for The Cv based Byzantines in no time at all.
Thanks to Simon for his hard work on the organisation and to everyone for playing in such a great spirit π
P.

I would say I offered to donate my red cube of death to Paul at the end of our game, but he was fairly definitive about where he would like to stick it, and the offer was rescinded. Probably just as well as it then performed again against Phil Steele to secure a win in my fifth game. Still I suppose that's it for the year luck wise and I will have to move on to the blue cube for Tarrington. Scott

Simon, I don't know how avidly you have recorded the statistics, but I wonder how the choice of armies used (own v opponents) distributed itself throughout the table, and how players did with their own army pair? Paul And I both used our own armies only twice, although with different results (I won two from two with my own pair, using the Mountain Indians both times). I have always felt that I did worse with my own pair at Alton, although my opponents there have always had more time to think about the choice. Here I suspect that the unfamiliarity of the Mountain Indians, combined with the marked difference which resulted from substituting the 2 x HCh which are almost always used in the Classicals, with 2 x LCh, and which possibly went unnoticed by my opponents, was a decisive factor. Did anyone have an even more extreme distribution, as was one of our concerns for the format? Personally I thought that the format worked very well. Scott
