Under the Black Banner is the title of my next project. This will not reach the level of the Severan project but will include a good many enemies of the Abbasid Caliphate. Aside from the figure painting and battles, the period of time offers additional items for the campaign rules. dbagora.blogspot.nl/2017/06/under-black-banner.html

Timurilank,
I loved the Christian Nubian army in DBA2 - I built up a Rise of Islam campaign set of about 11 armies including the Arab Conquest, all three Pre Islamic Arabs, Abbysinian, Nobades and the Christian Nubian. I have yet to bring these ones up to purple compliance - the change in the warriors from 3Wb to 4Bd or 4Ax necessitates a complete change in tactics after I finally finish painting the extra elements.
I did do well with them though - they gave me several podium finishes at tournaments and at the 2013 Worlds I used the Nobades as my day 1 (Books I&II) army and the Christian Nubians as my day 2 (books III&IV) army. My combined score over the two days gave me the overall win. The Nubians were the more successful (5 wins from 6) with the Nobades getting only 4 from 6.
Good luck with the Nubians
Cheers

At the moment, the Christian Nubian, Nobades, Muslim North African, Tulunid and Abbasid are complete and the Umayyad, Dynastic Bedouin and another Abbasid are on order. The campaign will start when this last order is completely painted.
The campaign map and historical timeline are done; the latter serving as reference as key historical events will play out on their actual dates.
Between now and the campaign start I will run some historical match ups with the Christian Nubian and Nobades starting the series. This should be interesting as the Nobades were impressive against the Severan Romans.

Under the Black Banner – figures arrived. I received today an order which would double the size of the various Muslim armies; unfortunately it was a partial shipment. Needless to say, the core units were not in that shipment, but some heavy cavalry, archers and Dailami infantry.
Chaffing at the bit to move the collection along I decided to paint up an army with what I had received and found the Baghdad Buyid Army (III/58a) fit the bill. This had plenty of heavy cavalry, Dailami infantry supported by archers of various types including crossbow and a religious faction (5Hd). Further investigation noted the Dynastic Kurdish (III/61) as allies – yes, knights!
Things are looking up now and I will make a start tomorrow.

Under the Black Banner - the Abbasid
I have posted a brief text with photo of the Abbasid. There is minor variation between the two sub-lists, but the dates do allow for interesting opponents. dbagora.blogspot.nl/2017/06/the-abbasid.html
A second Abbasid army is planned and these will be painted for the most part in 'black'.

I just received a notice that the last part of my order has been shipped. This means I can resume painting next week and add the Umayyad and a few other armies to the collection.

Under the Black Banner - The Umayyad
There is a brief text with photo describing the Umayyad army at the blog. With the Umayyad done, I can resume a series of historical match ups starting this weekend. dbagora.blogspot.nl/2017/08/the-umayyad.html

Under the Black Banner – the Baghdad Buyid This collection was not originally planned for, but as half of my order for miniatures would be delayed by a month or two I made changes to the list of armies to be painted.
At its core, the army does field 4 x 4Ax, but these do have the support of 3Bd, 5Hd and bow. Mounted are primarily Ghulam cavalry, but the army can use Kurdish allies (3Kn). dbagora.blogspot.nl/2017/08/the-baghdad-buyid.html

Under the Black Banner – Arab IndianThis is collection number nine for the project leaving one more to do. The Arab Indian are interesting as their primary opponents come from the Indian sub-continent, namely the Hindu Indian with a large number of elephants. The collecting and painting of new opponents will be saved for a ‘phase 2’, but for now, battles are a higher priority. dbagora.blogspot.nl/2017/08/arab-indian.html

Under the Black Banner – Historical Matches. Starting tomorrow I shall post a series of historical matches between the dynastic armies of the Umayyad and Abbasid against their adversaries.
Chronologically, the games will cover the late 7th to the early 10th century. In addition to the standard selection of arable, hilly steppe, and dry terrain, tropical and littoral are now added to the list.
There are 14 matches planned generating a total of 42 games.
