Keith,
Did you use the elephant and blade options?

No, I used seven Lh supported by five Ps. My belief is the elephant would use too many PIPs in an army that needs to be mobile.

After a break from gaming while travelling it was good to deploy some armies for several games this week, in each Rome faced Carthage. The first two were general games while the most recent two were part of our Empire Campaign. Interestingly the Punic commanders all opted for a full complement of pachyderms. Above, the Carthaginians recoil along the line as the Romans gain an initial advantage during one of the first two games early in the week. In the last two games a different Punic player opted for 4Ax over 4Wb. The choice worked well with Punic forces defeating the Romans easily in the first battle. Above, the Carthaginians fight for control of Magna Graecia in our campaign. Additional photos can be found here: thewargamesroom.wordpress.com/2017/07/14/punic-clashes/

A medley of games on Friday evening including a critical clash between Pyrrhus of Macedonia and Antigonos Gonatas part of our Empire Campaign. This was soon followed by two invasions of Gaul by Rome, each ending in Roman disaster! Photos of these games can be found on my Ancients Blog. In both games the Gauls were commanded by a visiting Californian, who hadn't played DBA since version 1.0. It was pleasing that the Gauls managed victory under his command. Always a good introduction to a new set of rules.

90 minutes to reach a decision? Sounds like you had a very tight game. And you did manage to take a good many photos.

Yes, it was a game to the wire!
I was pretty sure I had lost it when I was sitting at 1-2 and badly dispersed. All hope was gone when I eventually lost another stand taking me to but a 1-3 position. However, finally being able to organise the Japanese one last attempt was made and the Koreans finally collapsed. We both enjoyed an excellent game.

A long weekend out of town provides an opportunity for a series of games between my Later Samurai and my son’s new Chimu. Command posts and litters everywhere! Below, the Chimu general encourages his supporters forward. Elsewhere the Japanese 6Cv roll up the Chimu, though actually were eliminated in this game.

Last night the Malay were out again and engaged against the Burgundians, using BBDBA. The elephants and warband were hard pressed by artillery, archers and mounted men at arms. Despite several Malay attacks being pressed with great determination, and some artillery trampled by the pachyderms, the European interlopers final gained the upper hand. Above, the general situation. Below, the Malay left, which was first to break.

Last night the hoplites of Athens marched north to subjugate the tribes of Thracia. Three steep & rocky hills broke up the plain. The confident hoplites under Alcibiades began their steady advance while the wild barbarians countered on the flanks though were more reserved in the centre.
The wings of both armies soon stagnated and the focus shifted to the centre. Various Thracian attacks from the hills on the flanks of the Greek centre were driven off with ease causing much confusion in the ranks of the barbarians. However, the hoplites ranks continued to thin. Attempts by Alcibiades to reinforce centre were hindered by further skirmishing on the flanks. Undeterred, he resolved to press forward and destroy the weakened Thracian centre whose resolve was likely to break.
With victory in his grasp Alcibiades now watched as 300 Thracian mounted charged in a wedge through a small gap in his right centre. In doing so they overran a number of psiloi. A hasty reserve attempted to halt the barbarian cavalry, but no sooner was the Greek reserve engaged an additional 300 barbarian cavalry reinforced the attack. Isolated though the breakthrough was when a body of hoplites were overrun even Alcibiades resolve was dented. With failing light engulfed the field Alcibiades determined to retire and reform. Casualties had not been significant but these barbarians were clearly going to be troublesome...
Another excellent encounter using BBDBA, though this time without photos.
