I think that a point system is actually unnecessary, since DBA 3 has improved or adjusted most elements that were weak or too strong in prior versions. I completely agree with their being no need in standard DBA. I am however a little concerned that in BBDBA that some armies may be more competitive than others where players play generic games and focus on using the same army repeatedly. I can see this happening locally as a group of players that are perhaps more competitive are starting to play. My own interests are more focussed on games between historical opponents and I see myself using different armies and mixes of troops. In this scenario I don't see a real need for a points systems at all. Interestingly over the last few days I have played both DBMM, using points, and BBDBA without points as a contrast of the system. My opponent really likes DBMM but regularly plays DBA. From my perspective BBDBA produced a more interesting visual game and was fast moving. If anyone is interested you can find the reports at my main blog. thewargamesroom.wordpress.com

I tend to agree the 12 element game is quite balanced. The further you shift from that formula the less it is true in my experience. I don't think it can hurt to experiment, and CC will probably find the right balance for himself and his friends with a wee bit of effort. I'm interested to see what you find out CC.
cheers, Alex.

We dropped the cost of Pk, Ax, Wb and Bow to 1.5 based on feedback from players who felt these elements were underpowered.
Pk and Wb tend to be taken in sets of 2 anyway...
I think it changed after last year's Good Bad and Ugly tournament based on what elements players were using.
Market based decision.

I am too! MedievalThomas' points are what I will try first. Then, I will test my own ideas and report back on my own preferences. Sadly, figures are in storage until October The only painted figures I have kept out are my ACW because, well, they are painted

CrazyCap:
Thanks for the test let me know how it goes. I'm taking feedback and want to get the system to work - so far so good but tactics, terrian and troop types vary amongest groups, need as much feedback as I can get.

Of course! I was a part of play testing point system army lists for various Napoleon at War armies and my own Micro Armor set that I was developing. What I learned is exactly what you just said. Feedback and a large variety make such a large difference.
I will be sure to give you my report, or hopefully a full battle report!
