Quite a few of us lucky wargamers either own or have admired the painted armies of Paul Potter. The other day I was researching Jutes and Frisians and came across some of Paul's old HotT armies which forced me to go and pull out some figures.
Back in 2010, Paul created an incredible Germanic Kingdoms army:
The Drighten
I was impressed, way back when, with an incredible job of painting, but also, paul chose to represent the core of the army, the CINC and his bodyguards, with two Behemoth stands. Quite a new idea. He then added Warbands, Paladins, Knights & Beasts.
----
That same year, Paul posted some incredible images of a Saxon, Angle, Jutish or Frisian HotT host with a Valkyrie flying close air support.
Jutes
This army appeared to be mostly SPEAR, with Berserks, Beowulf (Hero), and a lurking Bear.
-----
So after this blast from the past, I had to pull out some figures and go to it. But first the planning.
For HotT I now use Thomas J. Thomas' "D3H2 (DBA 3.0 + Hordes of the Things 2.0) which gives you 24ap armies and a free General.
The Drighten & his comitatus would be two BHs (one free, as CINC); I chose Forged in Battle/ War & Empire Early Germans (15mm).
Early Germans
Flanking the BHs are 4 warbands; I used some of my very old Saxons for this (and one Psiloi):
Saxons
I added some Baueda Gothic heavy cavalry, a Copplestone Castings Conan (Sigfried), some generic wolves; and "the big Irish guy" from SPlintered Light as the point man for the Drighten's bodyguards:
Irish
It all shook out as:
Drighten *Cinc BH 0
Comitatus BH 4
Sigfried (PAL) 4
Heruli (Beasts) 2
Warbandsx4 6
Knights x3 (Goths) 6
Psiloi x2 2 = 24.
----------------------------------------
Those Jaunty Jutes
Again, following Paul's lead I planned to play the foot as SPEAR vice Warband; using my Baueda Viking Shieldwall figures
(paint by PP):
Spear
I used some SPLM personalities as well:
Berserks
I have Chariots Valkyrie and some other odds and ends. Paul used a custom made Odin figure but I substituted a Mage;
a Copplestone Castings Northlander shaman.
This army totaled up as:
JUTES
KING (Warband?) 0
Berserks (WB) 2
Hero/Beowulf 4
Mage 4
SPEAR x5 10
Valkyre 2
Beast 2 = 24
-------
After all the preliminaries, off to battle. And, as Paul had warned, the Jutes were demolished, 14-6. Beowulf and Siegfried both died heroically. BH, WB & KN proved just too hard to handle. The Jutes' Mage & Valkyre puttered around and failed to achieved anything worthwhile.
But, I really enjoyed revisiting these old Fanaticus pages and old times. These two HotT armies were fun to assemble and send off to feed the ravens. I plan to this again soon, maybe switching the Jutes from Spear to Warband. I also recommend Thomas J. Thomas' "D3H2" for fantasy wargaming.
I hope new members will go back and sift through the old Fanaticus pages, there's a wealth of knowledge to be gained. And some interesting armies that you might want to copy?
For example here's a "Mystic" Arthurian army (Britons, Irish & Picts together. I'm sure we can all pick out our Arthur. ;-)

Thanks again Paul for all your hard work and inspiration!
Cheers,
A
