Some weeks ago my lad and I decided to dust off some of my Zulus and British troops from my HotE Zulu War collection and have a game of Hordes of the Empire to finish off the school holidays. I had posted some of these photos to the Facebook page, but I thought I would share some photos of the game here as well. The game started well for the Zulus with the dice gods clearly in their favour. The British weren’t so fortunate. Not only were they hampered with me as their commander, when it mattered I could only manage to roll 1's. We got a few things wrong, quite probably more than a few come to think of it, but it was good to roll some dice together and most of all we had fun with the Zulus victorious. I am itching to get my Boers painted now… Thanks to Terry, Paul and Blake for creating such an enjoyable variant. Excellent presentation... Alas, I don't see too many of Her Majesty's troops left. Did Lt. Gen. Lord Chelmsford get a rematch?

That last photo is a great looking 'war face'.

Great to see. Thanks for the pics!
Did you play the Zulu as Hordes (as against Wb)? Were they unstoppable, or was it a 'close run thing'?
Martin
(I just acquired, at a Bring n Buy, some dervishes and Brits/Egyptians for a similar project....when I get time to rebase them)

Thank you for the kind words Gentlemen.
Paul - I am hoping Lord Chelmsford has the opportunity to redeem his reputation in the not too distant future. Unfortunately, with the way my dice rolls tend to end up, I am sure he will be facing an inquiry into another disaster...
Martin - We did play the Zulu as Hordes, but used the Wb movement by accident.
The right horn pretty much overran the NNC and were about to hit the Naval Brigade when tiffin was called. There was a bit of a scuffle in the centre with the chest. The dice rolls for the Zulus in combat were pretty ordinary and on several occasions the British were really lucky. The left horn were held back for a turn or two. If my memory serves me correct, the end result was the Zulus lost 6AP to the British 12AP, the most decisive Zulu victory out of the 5 DBX based Zulu War games I have played in the past, of which the Zulus have won 3 out of the 5 games.
Please share some photos of your Dervishes and Egyptians when they're finished. I have started to paint up the Boers for my friend and myself and have unpainted HotE based Egyptian, 1885 and 1898 British and Mahdist armies waiting packed away… waiting.

Wonder if "hordes moving at Wb speed" might be an appropriate 'house-rule/amendment'.?
Sounds like it might capture the spirit of the movie Zulu Dawn, at least (?).
The Dervish stuff, and Anglo-Egyptian opponents, were picked up at a recent show (Penarth, home of the Welsh DBA Open). Currently they're on big (100mm wide?) bases, 12 to a base, so some reworking very much needed. Also, as pre-painted figures, I'll be needing to retouch the paint quite a bit (previous owner has used some distinctly european flesh tones in places eg), but it's a little project I've been hoping to try for a while, as the Hordes of the Empire amendments look very interesting. Will post pics sometime (2018, probably!).

I should really play a few more games though before changing any of the rules, but I may well use the WB movement rate for Hordes in at least some of the future games, especially involving Zulus

I thought I would share a photo of a couple of measurement sticks I made. I am working on a couple of bayonets for the British player to use. My Zulu War Barker Marker. Below are two bases of cattle. One of the bases has been designed with an option to be able to remove a miniature and replace it with another or a 'blank'. This way they can be used in scenarios or just as scenery.

In addition to the Zulus, British and Boers, I have also been collecting miniatures of African Wildlife to use as both scenery and gaming elements. Most will have sabot bases made for use with HotT/HotE and other games based around the adventures of Tarzan and Allan Quartermain. Hippo by Irregular Miniatures. I still need to work on it a little and make the sabot base. Leopard in Tree. The Leopard is a 10mm Lioness miniature by Eureka miniatures. I made the tree. Great White Hunter and Companion by Essex Miniatures Giraffes by Prieser

We've tried playing Zulu v British with HOTT but amending them. I think we tried using the Zulu as horde but warband movement and in combat and the British infantry as Blades in combat but Shooters otherwise. Think the British were too powerful.
What did you use for the British?
Excuse my ignorance but is there a special version of HOTT for this era (HOTE?)
