I like painting figures, I like building terrain and boards. I enjoy the look of toy soldiers on toy terrain boards. I like to roll dice, make measurements and all the other haptic aspects of miniatures wargaming. Being able to have fun with building stuff at home and all by myself fits my personality very well. Military history gives interesting insights into the madness of mankind, plus it can serve as an easily digested starting point on researching a historic culture or region. As with boardgames and roleplaying, I do enjoy the story that unfolds on the board. And I do enjoy some of the social dynamics of the interaction with other players (the opposite is equally true: I do very much not enjoy some peoples gaming behaviour at all).

I like the comment from felixs about wargaming being a good starting point for researching a historic period or culture. I think I have learned more about ancient times and cultures with this hobby than I ever did in school. The warfare part is fascinating, but to really get into it it helps to understand the historic era in which it takes place, and why it took place at all. Also it helps you to understand why they fought the way they did, the limitations they had, etc. And given the limitations, how brilliantly some of the great leaders led their armies. I think one 50-caliber machine gun would have been devastating in those battles (as long as the ammo didn't run out). The "madness of mankind" is an apt description.

I like history, modeling and gaming. All three things support each other.. (Imagine a ven diagram.) it’s a more integrated hobby than most and you can spend time profitably in any of the 3 areas depending on life’s constraints and opportunities. I think this describes me pretty well! I’m happy making and painting models - but model railways don’t do it for me. I’m happy collecting things - but stamps don’t do it for me. I’m happy playing board games and Euro games - but chess doesn’t appeal. I’m happy reading and researching history - but not social or political history. So scramble these together and add the fourth element, the social side of gaming, some good friends and a few beers - Beer does do it for me! So that’s why I wargame it combines all the things I like doing into one hobby.
