In a game a few days ago, we had THREE Sp in a line that moved to contact a BUA. In the BUA was a Sp defending it.
Let's look at their modifiers in the initial combat:
DEFENDER: +4 for BUA vs. foot and +4 for spear is +8. -1 for each additional element (up to two) so this becomes a +6.
ATTACKER: +4 for each spear
So this is pretty clear so far.
What we could not figure out is does the attacker get the shield wall bonus of +1 for the spear in mutual side contact when assaulting a city?
We could not find anywhere is says you CAN'T but we wanted to make sure.

Page 11, Flank support factors: Some "Solid" elements add +1 when in frontal close combat in good going against enemy foot...
I would see no reason not to allow the +1 for side support as all three do in turn their combat. P. 26 (diagrams) covers assaulting a city, but use blade in that example.

Ok, I did not see the diagram.
However, they would only get the +1 if they still had a Sp in side contact when their turn to attack came up. In other words, you need to make sure you don't attack with the middle spear because if it gets pushed back, the other two spear don't get the +1 as they won't have a unit in side contact.

Ah, but page 10 paragraph 9 says:-
"Troops assaulting or defending a city, fort or camp use their combat factor against foot and do not count overlaps or flank or rear support".
