Nice report and photos.
What a shame you were not able to finish the game. Was there any particular reason the Macedonians started so far back?

We were going by Jeff Jonas' deployment diagram, but should have realized it would just lengthen the game.

We were going by Jeff Jonas' deployment diagram, but should have realized it would just lengthen the game. The deployment looked very reminiscent of DBA 2.2.
How difficult was the river to cross?

The river wasn't much of an obstacle at all. It prevented subsequent moves across. We may consider a -1 BW penalty next time. The rocky areas penalized mounted. There is an escarpment on the Persian side of the river at the bottom of the low hill that gave defenders a +1. If the game had gone on, the advantage was to the Persians, as Nabarzane's command was in a position to flank the phalanx. Another effect we may try is for the Elite/Mediocre grading, where we may try Joe Collins' idea of a 12 sided die using 1,1,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,5,6,6 for Elite, & 1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,6,6, for Mediocre.
