OK, just to share. Some thoughts on Essex. 28mm is my scale of choice for other games but for DBA, I'm a bit of a purist and stick to 15mm. Bought my first 15mm army in '91 and it was an Essex WotR army. Since then I have collected from brands such as Old Glory, Minifigs, Corvus Belli, Alt. Armies, Chariot Miniatures, Mirliton, Baueda, and Donnington and Heroica. Making allowances for the fact that Essex has been making models for decades and the sculpting style has evolved I have to say that Essex stands the test of time very well. They seem to care for their molds very well and the detail is crisp and clean, however...
A couple of things that make me crazy about Essex:
1. Buying whole armies is the best value but when you do you are at the mercy of what packs Essex decides are appropriate for your given army. Essex makes a very broad range of models and can nicely match period specific models. Unfortunately, they usually don't and you have to parse out the anachronistic or inappropriate models.
2. Beards and mustaches: Seriously?! Is it just me or does Essex have a thing for facial hair? Half my medieval models have mustaches, many more are way too hirsute.
On the plus side, I took delivery of an Anglo Danish and Viking army today. Compared to the Baueda Vikings and Normans I received last week the scale and detail is delicate and crisp. Some clothing and shield elements give me pause and I don't exactly need any more 14th C. Galloglasses ( but Essex decided that they would be good enough for Harold Godwinson's stand on Senlac Hill.
