If I deploy and BUA can I then deploy a river that runs through the BUA?
Cheers

Darryl,my gut feeling is no. But I wouldn't be able to point out in the rules where such a setup is prohibited.
Cheers,

The rule you are looking for is on page 6, paragraph/section 10, third sentence, “Rivers”:-
“(Rivers) can cross any feature except a Hill, Dunes, Oasis or BUA.”
(Actually, the mention of oasis is redundant.... ....only Dry regions can have an oasis, and Dry regions can’t have rivers)

Thanks for that Martin. Another redundant rule is under Littoral Landings, page 8, third paragraph, third sentence:- “(A littoral landing) may not include Elephants, War Wagons or Artillery.” There are no littoral War Wagons in the DBA 3.0. But getting back to Wombatdazzler’s original question:- No, you can’t have a river going through a BAU.... .....but you can place a river so that it touches a BUA, thereby gaining the river defence factor. See page 7, 1st paragraph, 7th sentence:- “Occupiers of a BUA beside any but a paltry river count as defending the bank against enemy elements assaulting it and still partly in that river.” Mind you, this rule is not unique to BUA’s: see page 6, paragraph 4, last sentence:- “There must be a gap of at least 1 BW between area features, and between an area feature (other than a BUA) and any battlefield edge.” So any rough or bad going terrain feature can be placed so that it touches a river (or waterway for that matter). The 1 base width gap between area features does not apply to linear features.

All good comments above but I just wanted to add a small point. While most people think of the rules for DBA as applying to tournament, rules are also very useful for scenario games. My local group plays these extensively. In which case it's possible for an army with war wagons to be on a table with a waterway. We try to apply the rules as given even in the scenario games.
