Exciting news on Friday, with a phone-call from Wendy at Westwind Games telling me that my second Dark Age kick-starter package was on its way and would arrive on Monday. This includes all the new Byzantine and Arab figures, along with some Sassanid Persians from their current Ancients range. The Sassanids will be used to bring my current armies to 3.0 compliance, the Byzantines will form the bulk of new Thematic and Konstantinian variants and the Arabs will be added to a mix of Donnington, Essex and Old Glory figures to also conjure up a number of new armies (ie. Conquest, Umayyad and Abbasid variants) for the 2024 Northern Cup.
She also tells me that the Dark Age range, which was due to be launched at Salute, before Covid-19 and the ensuing lock-down struck, will soon be on general release - great stuff ;-)

Just having a minor sad. I special ordered several packs of late roman legionnaires in mail armor to get just the right look for my late 4th early 5th C army and they sent me yet more cuir bouilli armored romans. ( I have something like a box of those already)

I started with Essex as they have good availability, consistency and a reasonable model selection, however, Khurasan Miniatures has an exceptional looking range for Late Romans. I doubt they mix with other brands terribly well but if I was starting over I would definitely consider them too

Still struggling to simply get any legionnaires with lorica hamata for my Arthurian Brits and Late Romans. Every time I order the correct SKU Noble Knight Games sends me the one with cuir bouilli armor. I now have 40 legionnaires thus armored. I might just take a stab at some Khurasan Late Romans and hope they mix well with Essex.

I do have some Khurasan LIR my son gave me but have to fill it out and will use Khursan to do it. I am having a hard time finding suitable Goths to fight them!

Yesterday my package arrived from Essex Miniatures Australia - I had cashed in two prize vouchers (from Cancon 2019 and Cancon 2020) and grabbed a decent stock of Early Biblical types to make up an early Zagros Highlander army for my "Great Revolt" campaign set. I also snared some Medieval Hungarians and a smattering of other Eastern European Medievals that caught my interest.
The order has been a long time in coming as Ray had to get the figures from England, and so delivery was hampered by the drop in flight numbers as airlines wind back.
Still - it wasn't as if I was starved of lead to paint.
I have outsourced my Old/Middle Kingdom Egyptians because no-one makes a Pharaoh on a litter, so my friend Bunnywhacker on the North Coast, a dab hand at conversions has offered to make the Command Position and paint the whole lot.
When next I see him there will be much red wine handed over.
Cheers

I've just preordered the Osprey title, The Normans in Italy. Amazon Au is advising that it won't be released until 1 September, a full month after the US/UK release!
Cheers,

The Osprey Space Wargame "A Billion Suns" was set to be published on 28th May according to Book Depository so I ordered it on the day (effectively a day before given the time difference
When the day clicked over in the UK I suddenly saw my book was Unavailable. Then later on in the week it was reset to be published in February 2021 - that is quite a lead time for a pre-order which is what my order has become.
So Normans In Italy is slated for 23 July on Book Depository - but I will be checking out what happens at least a couple of days after that before I place the order.
Cheers

Got the Koreans, Dark Elves, an Aztecs that sherlockgeek put up.
Just happened to b logged in to my mail when I checked Fanaticus so it was off the radar here.
Ended up giving him $50, so about half of retail as there are only 6 packs of Koreans and the Dark Elves are a smaller army.
One of his club members got the Swiss.
P.S. Outpost has mail armored Legionaries Roland. A bit larger, I think, than Essex. My presumption is that Noble Knight has a stock of the older figures so you get what they have in stock.
For my own army I just painted the armor on my TTG and OG15 legionaries as metal.

Caheers
David, according to Amazon the digital edition is available on 23 July in both markets. Print copy 1/8 in the US and 1/9 here in Aus. The vagaries of the international publishing world on display. Cheers,

By the way, also got some misc Warmaster empire, misc 15mm Arabs, an a lot of 'unknown' 20mm Greek hoplites, piloi, an cavalry from a fellow selling off a friends estate on TMP.
I have some 18mm AB an BH Greek and when I open the box thought that that was what my 'unknowns' were. However, when compared for size, they are 20mm. So presumably AB/BH at one point produced a line of 20mm Ancient (or Tony Barton sculpted some for another manufacturer?). u

So some years ago I took hold of the hoard of figures from a close wargaming friend who'd decided to finally make a clean break from the hobby - acquired and onsold (passing the $$$ back to him as they rolled in) his vast collection of Samurai (all Tin Soldier) and Blemmye (back from WRG6th when the Blemmye were all IrrA EHC/HC and IrrC LI with a couple of Elephants thrown in) and a smattering of unpainted 25mm Hinchcliffe Persians. I hung on to a small portion of the Samurai and Blemmye that I used as part of Operation Purple Compliance for my vast stable of armies - and some of the Blemmye had originally been my figures in the first place, being part of my old Kushite Egyptian army from my early years of wargaming. Just recently I think I have posted up anecdotes or put up pictures on the Book of Face mentioning that some of my old Strip Minifigs Nubians are back in action in my various African DBA armies.
A similar story now, more touching and poignant
I was contacted earlier this week because a member of the ACT's wargaming community had passed away and his family was keen to see that his figures were re-homed - so his friends have started the clearup and set up an account for donations to charity. They gave me first refusal on the 15mm ancients even saying that I could take them and onsell, stumping up when the selling was done.
So I went over and picked up the toys last night - they were pretty much all boxed up and were handed over. It wasn't until I got home and started to carefully check through then that I found some elements of strip minifigs Later Greeks that were part of my first ever Wargames Army. I would have barely been 15 when I purchased them as a batch of unpainted figures from someone vaguely related to the gentleman who used to host our wargaming back in Central Victoria. They were used in WRG5th and on through WRG6th and 7th. In my mid to late 20s I broke them up (along with the Kushite and Libyan Egyptian armies I built up before finishing high school) into DBA sized batches (DBA1.0 was a pretty new thing at the time and was all the rage) and sold them to fund my Wargames Convention Drinking and Figure habit.
So my Spartans have returned home. With their shields!!
Cheers
