The arid/desert terrain mat will be finish later tonight. This does not require flocking as there are plenty of scatter material to add colour.
Next are hills and templates for BUA and rough going for this mat. And to round off the project, new buildings to replace the older types.

Terrain pieces for the arid/desert terrain (120cm x 80cm) lack only some highlighting; this also includes the waterway shoreline.
Same technique as before, but the coat of Warm Grey was lightened by adding White. Highlighting, as before, suggested undulating terrain.
After the weekend, this should be ready for use.

The new arid terrain mat received its baptism, the Almoravid vs. the Andalusian of Ceuta.
Two games were played, one, the standard twelve and the last, a double size command. A report with photos will be posted later this week.

Two recent battles were fought on the newly made 160cm x 80cm terrain mat, with the games varying in size from the standard twelve to twice as many. The change in board size was made easy by removing two panels (20cm x 80xm). In the past I used string to mark off a game board. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/12/taifa-of-cueta.html

Terrain mats.
I now have three 160cm x 80cm terrain mats for DBX; one sea, an arid and one for Mediterranean climes.
Number four will complete the collection, a temperate one for the majority of European battles.
To test colour and shading I have an old game board (24in. x 24in.) painted in three different earth colours and is ready for two shades of grass flocking.
It takes a minute to apply paint or flock, but a day between steps to allow the work to thoroughly dry; this is especially so when spraying the surface with diluted white glue, flock and later sealing the surface with diluted white glue a day later.

Satisfied with the latest test result work can begin with various terrain pieces, hill and templates for BUA and rough. dbagora.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-final-terrain-mat.htmlLater this week, work on the final 160cm x 80cm terrain mat can begin.

The last step is done; game mat and terrain pieces are covered with a second colour of grass. This will dry overnight and the excess grass can be tapped off tomorrow.
I will be travelling to Belgium for the weekend and needed to finish the project before leaving. Next week the fun will begin.

The last mat is complete and photos can be seen at the same link, but scroll further to the update. dbagora.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-final-terrain-mat.htmlEach large game mat now has its own set of terrain pieces, in the past five or six boxes were brought out for a game, this has now been reduced to two or three.

Robert, the mats certainly turned out a treat. Very nicely done indeed. Cheers,

Greg,
Thank you for the comment.
Using the large game mat for standard size command is no longer a problem. The four panels (20cm x 80cm) and be placed at the table edge to reduce the playing field to, 160cm x 80cm for 36 elements a side, 120cm x 80cm for 24 elements a side and 80cm x 80cm for the standard game.
This evening I played two games, Charles Martel against the Saxons, and from the photos the ground appears as natural, areas thinly cover with grass and ground dotted with other types of green.

A Sea mat
I return Monday to begin work on a 160cm x 80cm Sea mat. This is painted, but could use a second shade of light blue or blue-green.
The plan is to design an adjustable coastline with beaches, but total land mass will not exceed 50% of any game surface.
When completed, this will more than likely find more use with the gunpowder and fantasy period.

Is this a sea mat for naval wargames, timurilank, or more a land based mat with sea ‘edges’ for landings?? (Didn’t know you did naval….)

Martin,During my research and scenarios for the Late Medieval period, I did develop a set for 15th c. naval engagements. They are for small scale battles, such as the Free Canton piracy of Hansa convoys or the Battle of Zatoka Świeża 1463 (Teutonic Order vs. Poland). Novgorod did make use of ships to cross Lake Ilmen and land their army at the B attle of Shelon 1471 (Novgorod vs. Muscovy). Half dozen ships were constructed for test purposes, but I am not happy with the scale. In the meantime, project Sea mat and terrain moves forward.

Tropical foliage
While making terrain mats and new pieces, I discarded many unsuitable items. In that category, were very large based jungle foliage; not particularly useful for DBX. From these, I salvaged its components, but needed something to fill the gap between undergrowth and palm trees. Solution found. dbagora.blogspot.com/2022/01/tropical-foliage.html
