I have recently commissioned Claudio (Baueda) for a terrain mat. Compared with the brochure sent, I can see my own terrain mats are in need of change. I will attempt to duplicate their technique and post the process to the blog. Hopefully, a Mediterranean mat will be the result as a ‘ Temperate’ one was ordered. I have used an old terrain mat to test ground colours and am satisfied with the look. Next step is the application of electrostatic grass, for this I shall have to wait until Tuesday when the local dealer is open for business. When completed, the whole will be posted to the blog with text and photos of each step.

The Saxons and Charles Martel
Today’s post offers a glimpse of the Saxons and though they would eventually be conquered by Charlemagne, during the reign of Charles Martel, they suffered the attention of several punitive expeditions. Lacking a centralised governing body, sub-tribes and clans were not averse to undertake independent action to raid or even occupy Frankish land. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/12/the-saxons-and-charles-martel.html

Al-Andalus 714 – 741
Further research on the wars of Charles Martel, I discovered more details pertaining to the invasion of al-Andalus, prompting a total re-write of the original post. Muslim governance of al-Andalus nearly mirrored the Roman century of crisis (3rd c. AD). dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/11/al-andalus-714-741.html

In the meantime, terrain pieces are next, roads, hills, and templates for BUA and rough ground,

Renewing the terrain, again.
Photos and a brief description of each step have been posted to the blog. The acrylic paint are of the brand Amsterdam and are available from most art shops here in the Netherlands. To finish the Mediterranean look, I applied electrostatic grass from Busch (7114) using an old strainer. This allowed for a better distribution of grass to the mat than a grass applicator. Just clean before straining the pasta. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/12/another-upgrade-project.html

The 26 terrain pieces (waterways, road sections, hills, and templates for BUA and rough ground) are ready for flocking, but this will be done together with the large mat. Today, I will start on 160 cm x 80 cm mat.
Rolled up, this has remained in storage for long periods between games, but it still retains much of its grass flocking. However, at a closer inspection, the application of glue and grass is uneven and turning the mat over, you can feel this clearly.
The first step is to brush off or thin the grass enough to reach a similar coverage as the test sample. A coat of white paint and leaving this to dry overnight, it should be ready for its first coat of colour on Saturday.

Brushing the grass off the large mat took longer than planned. Covered with white paint, the ground did have a Christmas look to it.
Next, Warm Grey was applied Sunday and today, highlight with Raw Sienna and mid Grey.

Next, Warm Grey was applied Sunday and today, highlight with Raw Sienna and mid Grey. The terrain mat is nicely shaded and is now ready for flocking. The 26 pieces of terrain will be flocked first as these will require some precise work, the large mat, not as much.

Timeline – Charles Martel
To bring a focus on a possible campaign(s), a timeline of battles has been posted to the blog. Some conflicts did not involve Charles Martel directly, such as the Muslim war with Odo, would make an interesting campaign. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/12/timeline-charles-martel.html

The Larger Terrain Mat
You will find photos and a brief description of the work done so far. The terrain pieces look good, next step is flocking the terrain mat. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/12/the-large-terrain-mat.htmlAfter completion of the project, the terrain pieces will be better organised, requiring fewer boxes to be pulled out for a game.

As of this morning, we now have a country wide lockdown until 14 January. By luck, I had restocked on supplies the day before the announcement.
Feeling creative, I began work on terrain related items.
From excess floor covering, I cut four panels of 20cm x 80cm. Placing two panels will reduce the large mat to a 120cm x 80cm playing surface; ideal for the double size command games. Two more will reduce the area further to an 80cm x 80cm surface for the standard game.
Next step is to paint them later today.
