Feudal Spanish knights and psiloi are done. This leaves both commands their compliment of spearmen short. Next order to Donnington will include them, Andalusian allies and more shields.

Another loose end is on the work bench - 6 x legio palatina (4Bd). These will better compliment the existing auxilia palatine.
Cleaning and undercoating today, tomorrow the fun begins.

Late Imperial legionnaires are done, based and ready for groundwork and flocking. The shield patterns turned out well that I may touch up the auxilia palatina to a similar standard.
It never ends.

The small lead pile has become smaller with the completion of the LIR legionnaires. The original legionnaires (spangenhelm, chainmail armour) were rebased to build a second command of Tervingi (8 x 4Wb, 2 x Ps).
Four horde (7Hd) were also based on the larger 40mm x 40mm size with the extra figures. After a closer inspection of Book II, ten armies used horde to fill their ranks.
The shields for the LIR auxilia palatina and cavalry are planned for next week.

Continuing with the mini LIR project, the Armenian will be upgraded to the ‘c’ sub-list.
This will entail some rebasing (4Kn to 3Kn) but nothing major. This should be completed by the end of the new week.

Armenians (‘c’ sub-list) are done. All twelve elements were given a new coat of paint; weapons a standard wood colour, clothing a vibrant shade.
The Sassanid are next; deeper bases for the horde and better headgear for the LH.

One of the much-discussed topics at the SOA forum centred on the representation of cavalry formations in rules sets. Of the many references cited, this one caught my eye: “ Ordnung für grosse Heere und Schlacten” written by Philipp von Seldeneck, published between 1480 and 1493. Of the six chapters, the last two cover cavalry formations and tactics. At the blog is a brief overview and a few changes done to the late medieval collection. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/05/the-wedge-formation-in-dba3.html

Sassanid horde (6 x 7Hd) now form four elements on larger bases (40mm x 40mm). All figures, including the LH, have headgear other than the globe hat – a great improvement. These can also be used as levy troops for the Central Asian States and Turkic armies.
The month of May has been quite productive; the Khanate of Kazan (2 commands), Feudal Spanish finished, LIR legionnaires, Armenian collection redone and finally, the Sassanid horde which nearly finishes the unpainted ancient and medieval armies.
The West Sudanese are all that remain and these will remain untouched until I receive DBMM book III. I expect that list will have more detail that what is offered in the DBA3 book. Until then, there are terrain projects to do.

I did forget something and am nearly finished with the shield patterns.
Six elements of auxilia palatina are nearly done. Amazing what a few more details and colour can do. Sassanid vs. Eastern Rome with Armenian allies later this week.

Unreliable Allies
Looking for ways to improve the Montlhéry scenario, I found an early Slingshot article with Phil’s proposals for unreliable allies. These were found useful and have been added to our ‘double size’ command game. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/06/unreliable-allies.html

Four Nations Test Match. To gain a better understanding of the deployment and tactics of two East European armies, I decided to conduct an experimental four nations series between, Post Mongol Russia, Lithuania, Later Polish and the Teutonic Order. All the armies will be featured in two historical scenarios and some practice seemed a good step. This took about three months to complete and battles were played between painting sessions. Each army had 24 games, half as the invader and half as the defender. Results are posted to the blog with a bit of commentary and photo. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/06/east-european-tests-games.html

Battle in Armenia (BBDBA)
Eager to use the newly painted LIR legionnaires and auxilia, Constantius II crossed the frontier into Armenia to contest the Persian regime change in that kingdom. Together with allies from the royal houses, Rome confronted the Persians ready for battle. Report and photos at the blog. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/06/battle-in-armenia-bbdba.html

Uprising in Armenia
News of the East Roman setback against the Sassanid (see BBDBA) had not reached the rebel leaders of Persian occupied Armenia in time to postpone their planned uprising.
Tomorrow, I will post a report with photos of a battle that took place near the Caucuses mountains.
