I have been following your thread with interest and wonder what your take on which figures best represent these armies? Do you follow the more traditional Hun type representation, a more Bactrian/Sogdian Cavalry type appearance or a more Parthian type look in figure choice?

Haardrada, There is enough evidence that the horse archers appeared similar to Parthian style of dress (silver dishes, wall paintings). For the heavier cavalry, I have used the Later Sassanid types offered by Old Glory; small shield, mail face covering,, riding an armoured horse. A matter of personal taste, the horse coverings are painted leather so small details will stand out such as pennons, horse harnesses, and pieces of clothing. This seems about right for an army of the 6th/early 7th century, heavily influenced by Sassanid style armour.

Most of the figures are in court dress, but the colours should offer some inspiration.

Sassanid vs. the Alan The Alan have made regular incursions throughout the entire reign of the Sassan dynasty.
With each battle, the Alani meet a slightly different Sassanid army as its composition changed during the years. Follow the link to blog for the report with photos. dbagora.blogspot.com/2019/11/sassanid-vs-alan.html

Not so good for the largely LH Alani, even with 4x3Kn backing them up! Your thoughts on the 3-0 results?

So given the Alani got to be both attacker and defender and still lost all 3 battles, where do you think they lost the battles?
Be brave and take 12xLH for the Huns.

A LH general is useful to flee the battlefield, but why would one want to reduce their combat potential of their general? The Alani lost to a better opponent, but they will improve with more experience.

So he can zip around with them.

You were the general for both armies, right? So you're saying that the Sassanid is simply a better army?

Snowcat, The Sassanid have been used often enough that deployment and battle tactics are a matter of routine. That level will take a while for the Alani.
