A bit of UK DBA news:-
After some uncertainties due to venue issues, the PAWS club and the Alton DBA organiser (that’s me 🤗) are now very pleased to announce a collaboration/joint venture -
The ENGLISH DBA OPEN WILL RUN on SUNDAY 13th OCTOBER, at the Chawton Village Hall, Alton, GU34 1SB, Hants . i.e. the venue recently used for Alton DBA.
(This event will be part of the Society of Ancients UK DBA League).
Full details will follow over the next few weeks, but ‘one for the diary’. I’ll be arranging the venue, and PAWS will be running the actual event.
Cheers
Martin

Quick question:
Will the format remain as previously, i.e. World Cup style, group stages then knock out with groups decided by “dates”?

Quick question: Will the format remain as previously, i.e. World Cup style, group stages then knock out with groups decided by “dates”? I messaged Bill. There’s a strong chance that’ll be the format (or close). Bill is hoping to discuss the Open with Lindon (and myself) at the weekend. I’ll keep you posted.

Quick question: Will the format remain as previously, i.e. World Cup style, group stages then knock out with groups decided by “dates”? Yes, format will remain essentially same as before. Groups based on army date, with knock-out games using supplied armies. Current plan is for an initial 4 group games scoring points. Then the top 4 will contest the semi-finals and final (& 3rd-4th playoff) on a knock-out basis whilst the rest will play a fifth "points" game to add to their final score for 5th to last ranking. The problem is the timing, as we have to be packed away and out of the venue by 5 pm, no later. So to get 2 knock-out games we have to start those by about 2:30 and get four hour-long group games in before that.

Are allies allowed and are the knockout armies allocated or can you choose them from a list?

are the knockout armies allocated or can you choose them from a list? From a past comp : "The winner of each group (plus the best of the rest if necessary), will then play a knock-out tournament (a final and possibly semi-finals) to determine the overall winner. During the knock-out stage, competitors will secretly choose an army from all those that will be made available by the organisers." portsmouthwargames.wordpress.com/english-dba-open/

Oh that’s a shame. Rather than go for the lowest aggression so you can set the terrain It would have tested the mettle of the player

Oh that’s a shame. Rather than go for the lowest aggression so you can set the terrain It would have tested the mettle of the player The PAWS club have run the Open final that way (usually) for a long time, and it works really well. With four armies provided, the top player after group stages picks an army from the four, then the second ranked player etc. However, what may seem like the ‘best’ army to one may not be as good as the ‘second best’ in the hands of another player, with a different style of play. The Armies of India set up used once or twice before was very challenging…😁🐘

Doesn't seem fair to me, but I understand I'm in a minority as other may call this 'challenging' but it only ever seems to be challenging for one player

Are allies allowed and are the knockout armies allocated or can you choose them from a list? Allies are allowed except in the knockout semis and final. The armies for the knockout games are chosen from those provided by the organisers.

The English DBA Open will take place on SUNDAY 13th OCTOBER 2024, hosted by me but run as previously by Bill and Lindon of the PAWS club. (This will be part of the Society of Ancients UK DBA League).
Timings - 10:00 until 17:00. Venue - CHAWTON VILLAGE HALL, ALTON, HANTS, GU34 1SB
Format - Open, bring any legal army from the DBA v3 lists (nb allies permitted). There will be four group stage games, followed by the top four players fighting a semi final and final (+3rd/4th playoff). The semis and final will use a set of four themed armies provided by PAWS. Those players not in the semis will get one further round with their own armies, making five games for the majority, or six games for the top four.
Entry cost - £7 per person, paid on the day.
Teas and coffees provided, but venue has NO catering (bring lunch).
Please get in touch if you would like to attend.
