I'm trying to find suitable 28mm figures for Thessalian horse, especially for the "I/52" period, but hopefully also for the later "II/5" period. It seems that most Thessalian cavalry figures are geared towards Alexander's troops though. Though I'm not sure how era-appropriate they are, I've looked at Hail Caesar's figures, which seem nice, but for some reason are nearly impossible to get here in the US. (TheWarStore has been trying for months to get them for me to no avail.) I've also looked into Foundry, as my Hoplites are Foundry, and WG132 and WG133 seem reasonable fits. www.wargamesfoundry.com/ancients/macedonians/cavalry is the page I found those on, even though obviously the period is sketchy for my use. Also, I'm not sure if Boeotian helmets are right for this period? The more I research, the more it seems that Thessalian cavalry were all the artistocrats who were "too cool" to fight as Hoplites, I imagine that they'd still have body armor and maybe helmets, even though they're fighting as LH in the earlier period. Any tips? Should I stay away from figures with helmets, and favor sun hats? Or if helmeted, should they be Corinthian-type helmets, or open-faced Boeotian helmets? As an aside, though I know Thessaly will have to work hard not to get stomped by all-Hoplite armies like the Spartans, I like the image of the army being roughly equal parts aristocratic cavalry, Hoplite citizens, and "wild mountain folk ally" Psiloi. Seems like it will be a fun army to run. (My other army in this period is the Spartans, and I have some Athenians and Persians under construction as well)

It is a fun army; I could offer advice on 15mm figures, but not 28mm ones.

Nice to hear, Commiades.
Mostly I need advice on what sort of equipment would be proper for Thessalian cavalry in the 5th Century BCE. Would they have been armored? Helmeted? If so, what types of helmets?
My foot actually have a mixture of helmet styles - some with Thracian style helmets, some Corinthian, Chalcidian or similar styles. I'm also giving them a lot of shield aprons, under the assumption that they were more used to fighting missile-using troops than their southern neighbors.

I found a little information in AMPW, which I won't quote here for copyright reasons, but which indicates that Thessalian cavalrymen of the 5th Century and earlier wore sun hats and were probably unarmored. After around 400BCE, there are helmeted and armored representations, including the various helmet options Foundry provides.
So it looks like I *do* need to look for largely unarmored horsemen for my LH.
The later II/5d army's Cv option should probably be helmeted and armored men, and seem to phase in after the Peloponnesian War. Before then, I should stick with my LH.
For the Cv General element, helmeted and armored would probably be reasonable, given that this element would represent the wealthiest and best equipped of the horsemen.

Have you checked the Essex Miniatures site? They have figures labelled Macedonian and Punic Wars - so not Hoplite period as such - but some of the mounted may be able to meet your requirements including: MP9, MP10, MP16, MP30, MP31 MP48, MP112. Codes MP30 AND MP31 are called Thessalians and, although MP112 is labelled 'Spanish', it might still be of use to you as the headgear is fairly generic and it has no body armour.
