For those who have not read it, I highly recommend "The Art of in the Western World" by Archer Jones.
His analysis includes interesting force diagrams that show the relationships between different types of battle field formations from the ancient world to World War II
www.karwansaraypublishers.com/en-us/blogs/ancient-warfare-blog/battlefield-rock-paper-scissors
In his comparative force analyses knights = tanks, horse archer = aircraft, etc.
And so by using this same method we can create a DBA based set of rules for the second world war - with similar/same combat strengths, movement, combat results, etc.
Scale would be huge with each unit equal to a division, corps, air fleet, etc. and each grid hex being whatever size is needed to show either the entire European Theater of Operations of local campaigns like North Africa
And so we have (with some tweaking):
spear = infantry
pike = anti-tank
blade = storm troopers/marines
warband = partisans
auxilia = mountain
horde = volksturm / levies / home guard
psiloi = field artillery
bow = anti-aircraft
knight = armor/panzers
elephant = advanced heavy tanks
cavalry = tactical bombers
scythed chariots = paratroopers
camelry = mechanized / motorized infantry
light horse = fighters
war wagon = field fortifications
artillery = strategic missiles
command wagons = army HQs
camp follows/denizens = industry/factories
baggage = logistics/supplies
litters = city fortifications
galleys = major surface (battleships/cruisers) / aircraft carriers
ships = light surface (cruisers/destroyers) / submarines
boats = troop transports an landing craft / merchant marine
Thoughts or comments?
