Size isn’t everything… …at least, so I’ve been told. “God always favors the big battalions.” - VariousThe BIG battalions get all the chicks... ...at least, so I've heard. Big is beautiful!

More BIG DBA 25mm fun yesterday, thanks to two fellow SoA members David, our host, and Paul. We didn't follow the terrain 'laying out' rules (this time or last) but followed an old wargaming tradition of the host laying out the tabletop terrain and choosing both armies, then players dicing for who went with which army. We used the aggression values to decide which army / player took which side of the table and who moved first. We played pip allocation by the rules, nominating which commands will get highest and lowest pip dice. This result in the Late Roman left having lowest dice facing the Sassanid right which was also receiving the lowest Sassanid dice. So not much action took place on that wing as the two opposing commands face off each other! Paul commanded Late Romans, deploying a small right wing command anchored on difficult terrain, his largest central command and a large left wing command. David commanded the Sassanids with a large central command and two smaller wings (ten elements each from total of 36). My role was sub- commander with David's Sassanids, controlling his left wing command. Both central commands received the highest pip dice, and most of the action took place there; where initially the Late Roman central psiloi went hunting the Sassanid elephants!! Later it became a real slogging match as Roman Kn / cataphracts, Roman Cv / heavy cavalry and Roman Bd / Legions took on and cut threw Sassanid elephants, cavalry and (solid) Hordes!! On my flank I created an overlap on the Roman centre with my support elements (Ax / Ps / LH) screening off enemy right wing of foot (Ax) while I overlapped the Roman centres right flank. On at least five occasions I created front and flank ‘pincer’ on the end element, and twice created ‘hammer and anvil’ (front and rear) engagement on a Roman Cv element. On FIVE successive combat dice rolls I threw 1 !! Losing elements destroyed as my opponent threw high. On one occasion I threw high a six, to my opponents six, the rear attack / support factor deciding the enemy Cv / horse fate but soon after I was back to throwing 1s or 2s. (I swopped dice three times… who says I am not superstitious!) We nearly brought the Roman centre to demoralised status but ultimately failed while first our centre became demoralised then our left wing. Just before the Sassanid left became demoralised, the Sassanid King Of Kings was ‘taken out’ the victim of throwing another 1 on a combat dice roll the final combat score 9v1 to the Roman. Hail Caesar…. CarlL
