I don’t think I ever got off the naughty (bottom) table! I thought my Bosporans had a nicely balanced mix, but they did not have a good day, winning only once in the hands of an opponent... I note on the positive side that you are now the SOA champion - Well done!

Thanks for organising yesterday Pete. A fun day and also learnt something new in the third game, thanks to your clarification that HCh are classed as 4Kn!

Episode 2 from joy to despair and back again.
Game 4 I was using Mark's Early Kyrenean Greeks with terrain of i think a waterway, a marsh and a wood? No pics exist from end of game 2, as usual I got too excited by games and forgot. I placed my HvCh on my left with two partly in a marsh but no worries they would be out quick. I placed some Ps just incase Athens decided to take a party boat to the, well to the party. Lack of support led to the Thebans Cv and bows doing over the Chariots. One of my Ps tried yo hold off the Theban Ps in the Marsh and the HvCh deciding game was over if they did not get luck went in for some fights vs Sp. I lost like 5(G) - 0 and dont think I gave Mark a particularly hard game at all. Still enjoyed it of course but didn't cover the EKG with the glory they deserved.
Game 5 vs Martin Myers and his Kassandros Sucessors IIRC we had a few rounds of cagey approach then 8Sp clashed with the Pike for a shove fest. Holes started appearing and game seemed up for grabs for either of us. Then bang in one turn I think lost 4 elements for a 5 - 2 drubbing. I had a chance to move some Ps through my spears into a Nellie bug didn't which was non too clever. I loved the game with two phalanx type forces having a crack at each other.
Game 6, so down in the dumps I got drawn against Stevie. Fair to say we are both an acquired taste and love some bants bug always have an enjoyable game. I was using his Thessalians with Lh and got his terrain of two little woods and some plough. The hoplite forces lined up with my Lh facing off against CV and Ps on my left. Stevie realised I needed cheering up so arranged for Cv to lose against Lh, Bw followed suit then Sp decided they had also had enough and gave me a 5 - 0 victory
3 wins, 2 losses and a winning draw which I was delighted with. Fab event, great opponents and loved the theme as I have loads of Greek armies. Highlight for me was my lowly 3Bw facing off against some Spartan Sp and managing to beat them in combat.
Will def attend again

A nice write-up Baldie, and a nice tournament, with nice people. Plus we had time for me to gulp two pints of cider at lunch time.

I took Dark Age and Geometric Greeks (list I/30a), with light chariot general, one cavalry, four each of warriors (3Bd) and spearmen (3Ax), plus a couple of skirmishers (Psiloi). My carefully thought out plan was….I’d owned the army for about a decade and never taken it to a tournament, so it was time for them to get their toes wet…..and thus I took the plunge.
My games were: 1. Invading Thebes, vs Lee Storey. Lee’s Athenian ally didn’t bother taking to their ships to threaten a landing, but bolstered his left, where a temple complex became the background for a long and bloody scrap, which my brave boys lost 1-4. Good game, fast and furious at the end.
2. Using Later Thessalians against Stevie Andrews, who commanded my Greeks. In the centre the Thessalian hoplite phalanx held up the attacking swordsmen long enough so my massed mounted could overwhelm the opposing right and surround the enemy charioteer general. Win by 4g-0. A run of sixes certainly helped…..ssoooorrrryyyyyyyy. 🥴
3. My lot now attempted to repel an invasion by Tim Rogers’ Black Sea Greeks, who declined to attack my flank from the sea…so it turned into a head-to-head, plus a tussle in the large village in the invaders’ left flank. Just when I thought my lads would luck out in the village scrap, time was called ( / sunset ended fighting). Winning draw, 2-1.
4. The post-lunch clash was using Hellenistic Spartans+ Aetolians v Tony Green, who took the Dark Age commander role. The action developed on the Spartan left, where the Aetolians plus more and more Spartans were fed into a running fight against a wide sweeping flank attack. As the enemy were poised to strike they suffered a nasty bout of indecision (three successive ‘1’s for activations/PIPs). The Spartans took advantage, and pulled off a lucky 4-2 win.
5. Next, Paddy Myers defended with ‘Navarrese in Greece’, a beautifully presented army. The Ancient Greek psiloi swarmed forward to nab a rugged hill on the Navarese flank, and caused some upset, while in the centre the Navarrese Almughavars fought off attacks by the Dark Age warrior foot. Some kernights were kernobbled, but others swept in to clinch victory…a VERY close and hard fought defeat for my bunch, 3-4.
6. Finally, using Chris Kemp’s Epaminondas-type Thebans. In the centre the Sacred Band and colleagues rumbled forward to pin the enemy centre…meanwhile…a wood on the Theban left was under serious threat from psiloi and spearmen/auxilia, but on the opposite flank the Theban cavalry fought well against their opposite numbers to secure the win, 4-1.
And so I came away with three wins and a winning draw, far better than I had hoped. I had feared the Dark Age Greeks might be too tough, with 1/3 of the army ‘warriors’, the much vaunted 3Bd troop type (so for its compulsory terrain selection I gave it a waterway, which only its opponents might use for landings, as the Dk Age Greeks aren’t littoral). However, looking back the army itself actually LOST FIVE games and secured a solitary winning draw, so I was well adrift in my estimate. One key factor was that all its troops were fast and fluid types, and recoil from tightly packed hoplites on a drawn combat….and there were hoplites aplenty.

I don’t think I ever got off the naughty (bottom) table! I thought my Bosporans had a nicely balanced mix, but they did not have a good day, winning only once in the hands of an opponent. I was interested to see some new situations in games - one of my legionaries was destroyed by two shooting bows on a 6-1 and in another game my spear line was decimated by spears (who usually go on scrummaging for ever). Had my greatest successes using other players psiloi. So, an interesting set of games against fun opponents. The venue was excellent and the whole thing was ably run by Pete. Thank you. You realise of course this means you’ll be a strong contender for the Northern Cup next weekend…?! 😉🤣 P Well that went well. Who's the other poor sod?
