Looking at the various element combat factors (vs foot and vs mounted) you'll see a lot of completely unrelated units types having the same combat factors.
Spears and artillery (4 and 4)
Light horse, Psiloi and artillery in a fort (2 and 2)
Auxilia, cavalry and camelry (3 and 3)
Knights, pikes and war wagons (3 and 4)
But suppose we used 8 sided dice instead of 6 sided for combat resolution?
That's almost double the combat factor combinations (64 vs. 36) allowing for more variety and nuance in assigning combat strengths.
