Certain rulebooks (2.2) differentiate between heavy camelry (3CM) and light camelry (2CM).
But a camels top speed (except in dunes and oases) is about half that of a horse.
Being larger, bulkier and slower than horses they aren't really capable of the same "shoot and scoot" tactics used by light horse.

You try being a Spartan army facing Bedouins in the desert and then tell me they are too slow. Had some great games that Lart tourney including the desert one but by eck I got slaughtered.
