Thanks for all your efforts in organising the comp, Peter. Much appreciated! Let me reiterate what Mark just said on behalf of us all A big thankyou to Peter for his hard work leading up to and during the competition. DBA is the wargame they play in heaven and this was one of the heavenly examples. Interesting armies, great games, good company Cheers <Post No. 1500> Sounds like a very enjoyable day. Re the heavenly revelations do you think they have cracked many of the obscure rules up there. Nof ready just yet but would love a seat in the heavenly pub chatting over the post game table.

If DBA is what they play in heaven, what do they play in Hell? Possibly WRG 7th…..or Newbury non-Fast Play. 🙃. Some still love them, but I wouldn’t go back….

Now that I've returned home from CANCON it's time to reflect on my gaming experience. As I have already mentioned the organisation of the 2 day tournament was exemplary, with nary a hiccup and my opponents were top shelf people.
Day 1 was restricted to Books 1 and 2 armies. I fielded the Skythians (I/43b) with 1x3Kn(Gen), 1x3Kn, 8xLh and 2x3Ax. With an aggression of 4, I expected to be the invader in most, if not all games. My hope was to win a couple of games.
Round 1 saw the Skythians invading Bactria and up against Justin Swain's Graeco-Bactrians. The result was a 4-0 win for the Skythians.
Round 2 was another invasion, this time Parthia. Michael Spitzkowsky's Parthians rued the day they thumbed their collective noses at Skythians and suffered a 4-2 defeat. With 2 wins my expectations had been met.
Round 3 saw the Skythians continue on their rampaging way and invade Armenia. David Lawrence was running Tigrane's Armenians. This particular encounter was a very tense one with David dispatching my Kn(G) and 2 other elements. However, in the last bound I was able to effect enough kills to ensure a 5-3G victory.
Post lunch and time spent perusing the traders, Round 4 was fought in the Levant against Guy Sheppard's Sea Peoples. The Skythians came up against a Fast Blade army and didn't like the experience one iota. Guy's masterful handling of the Sea Peoples saw the Skythians suffer their 1st defeat, 4-1.
Round 5 came around quite quickly and once again the Skythians invaded, this time closer to home, the Bosphorus. Gary Moriarty's Bosporans didn't attempt a Littoral landing, concerned with the large number of LH swarming over the battlefield. After another tense and challenging game the Skythians prevailed 4-3.
Round 6, the final one of the day, once again saw the Skythians wearing their away kit and invading the land of the Ostrogoths. Peter Braham's Herulian knights, including the General's element, were treated quite roughly resulting in a 3G-2 victory to the Skythians. So Day 1 ended with a an unexpected 5-1 win ratio.
Day 2 armies saw Books 3 and 4 armies take the field. I went with another Steepe army, II/11a Turfan Uighar (Agg 3), comprising of 1x3Cv(G), 2x3Cv, 3xLH, 3x4Sp and 3x3Bw. As with the Skythians, I didn't expect to be positioning terrain.
Round 7 saw me sitting opposite Austin Kenny's French Ordonannce and invading the lands of the Most Catholic king. After a nerve wracking encounter the Uighars were able to overcome the French 4-3.
For Round 8 the Uighars had to defend against the Italian Lombards of Mark Raadgever. Making use of the Steepe terrain the Uighars were able to repel the Italian invasion with a close fought 4-3 victory.
In Round 9 Stephen Hopkins brought his Medieval French to the field of battle where he hoped to throw off the Uighars and send them back to Central Asia. Despite it being a "near run thing" the Uighars prevailed to the tune of 4-3.
Post lunch, Round 10 kicked off with the Uighars invading the Kingdom of Jerusalem where Mark Brandon-Baker had marshaled his Early Crusader forces to meet the interlopers. A very tense and bloody battle ensured with the soldiers of Christ seeing off the Uighars 6-5.
Round 11 brought the WOTR Tudors of Patrick Hersey up against the Uighars on their home territory. Despite Parick$'s best efforts, the bad lands of Central Asia swallowed another invading force to the tune of 4-2.
The last game of the tournament witnessed the Uighars foolishly invading the Swiss cantons where Brenton Searle's Late Swiss were guarding the alpine passes. The Uighars were not able to match it with the 6Bd heavy army and as a result were beaten to a pulp 4-0.
Overall I was very pleased with my win/loss ratio of 9-3, and especially gratified the I was able to collect the prize for 2nd place.
Once again, many thanks to the organisers of DBA at CANCON and to my opponents for the great gaming experience.
Cheers,
