Light Horse (2LH) was not just represented by fast units of mounted skirmishers.
A variation included those light horse that also had some body army and a more cohesive formation. Similar to the difference between 3BW and 4 BW.
In addition, LH should be divided into those that primarily used javelins and darts and those that were truly horse archers relying on the bow.
The former would be found in rough terrain (the Numidians of the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, Hobelars fighting in the bogs and forests of Ireland) while the later roamed the flat steppes of Eurasia and the Middle East.
LHJ would have special movement through rough terrain. LHB would be faster overall with a greater range.
Examples:
2LHJ - Numidians, Moors, Scythians, Arabic jihad
3LHJ - Byzantine koursores, Irish Hobelars, Spanish Jinetes, War of the Roses Scurrers
2LHB - Parthians, Huns, Mongols, Tatars
3LHB - Hungarians, Stradiots, Crusader turcopoles, Russian druzhina

Yep, I hear ya. Wait until you see what we come up with in the special scenarios we will be making up in the next year. With that said these changes will be only scenario specific.

You could work the distinction less on armour, more on use. So simply shooting and melee. You would end up from memory just adding two classes: 2LHS (2LH), 2LHM, 3CVS, 3CVM (3CV). The shooters use bow or javelin at a distance for preference, the melee use javelin, spear and lance in melee for preference. The 2 version would tend to be unarmoured skirmishers, the 3 in closer order or with armour. 2LHS - Numidians, Parthian horse archers. 2LHM - Byzantine light lancers and Macedonian scouts using lance. 3CVS - Sassanid clibanarii, Sarmatians. 3CVM - Most Roman heavy cavalry, Macedonian companions, Goths. Just a thought.

We have already introduced Fast Cav in D3H2 and Fast Medium Mounted in A Game of Knights & Knaves and I think this covers what you are looking for.
In Knights & Knaves if armed with Bow they gain the Evade Ability (convert Destroyed into Flee result if they have a higher MA in the Terrain occupied).
War of the Roses scurrers did not skirmish in that sense though and should stay Medium Mounted retain Shock v. Medium Foot.
Generally we advise avoiding adding new troop types as this greatly increases complexity and trying to stick with the rules we already have. By having Fast Cav you get +3 MA5 but losing on ties. So you just reuse an existing rule.
To distinguish Jav armed troops we normally give them Lethal (+1 on a win) this lets them scatter LH w/Bow using Phil's original conception of LH w/Bow attempting to avoid sustained melee with Jav armed mounted.
So LH, Fast LH, Cav, Fast Cav - cover what we need without creating new rules or new troop types.

In that case it only adds two variant classes, but does require rule changes, but not drastically I think. David Constable
