I’m not a regular HotT player and I didn’t give my opponents much of a challenge yesterday (2 wins and three loses) but what a joy to play with some of Pete’s beautiful fantasy armies. During the day I must have played with every type of HotT element, some for the first time and I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time grinning and chuckling during a tournament.
The matched pairs themes were ingenious; the selection and conversion of figures astonishing, the match of characters to HotT element types inspiring and some of the strongholds stunning. It was a well organised and brilliant spectacle with themes from literature, film, TV and historical events that showcased HotT at the highest level.
‘Allo ‘Allo is an old popular sitcom series in the UK about a French café owner during the German occupation of WWII. It still makes me laugh when I see repeats on TV and Pete’s army had me in hysterics – the British airmen disguised as nuns (lurkers)… lieutenant Gruber in his ‘little tank’ (behemoth)… Von Smallhausen the Gestapo officer and Helga his attractive assistant (sneaker).
In the 1980s UK politics pair, rioting miners as warband and flying pickets as flyers was hilarious. Remember ‘Gis a job’ an iconic phrase from 80s TV evoking memories of the pain of unemployment - this was plastered on a miners’ banner – riotous! My Arthur Scargill striking miners’ hero general was well and truly crushed by a police vehicle (behemoth), overlapped by mounted Police officers (knights) and with a door closed by some riot Police (blades) - pun intended. Much damage was also inflicted by a Norman Tebbit magician whilst a Margaret Thatcher hero directed from behind the line, firm faced and clutching her sturdy handbag. Listening to Pete describe how he made some of the strongholds was an education. Great stuff!
A fantastic feast of fantasy fun; fanks Pete.

Due to a bizarre transposition of two sheets these results differ slightly from the announcement on the day. Grovelling apologies have already been offered to those concerned. Note to self - always get the paperwork checked by a chum!
Huge congratulations to our victor who only played his first game of HOTT the week before and who went out of his way to support the event rescheduling his work shift and having to leave for work ahead of the prizegiving...

Thanks to everyone who came and created such a lovely supportive atmosphere - everyone helping each other along with unfamiliar rules. It was a joy to see the gaming community in such a positive caring mode.
There seems to be a lot of demand for base width movement so I will endeavour to add that in next year.

I too would like to thank Pete for a wonderful and interesting series of scenarios, all played with beautifully painted figures (so beautiful in fact that I was reluctant to touch them, what with me having fat fingers and hands like a bunch of bananas!). Sadly I never got to play the “War of the Worlds” game…but my Sioux Indians did manage to kill Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, even though I ran out of time for an all-out win and ended in a mere ‘winning draw’.
Overall my performance was abysmal:- One outright draw as Allo Allo’s Rene Artois (6 AP lost each…then we ran out of time). Two ‘winning draws’ (where my opponent lost more than me…then we ran out of time). And two outright defeats (one well deserved, and the other due to phenomenal bad luck). Still, I enjoyed every one of ‘em.
As for a demand to use base width movement instead of the archaic paces and inches… …well, it’s only me, so I wouldn’t give it that much attention.
Base width movement is superior, as it’s 50% more, making games play quicker, which is probably why Phil Barker added it as a suggestion in HoTT 2.1. The main criticism with it is the excessive speed of aerial troops. However, there are two possible solutions:- (a) Have ground units use base widths, while aerial troops stay with paces and inches (then the aerial movement on a 2 foot table will stay the same as it is now) (b) Treat the table side-edges as an obstacle, so fleeing troops can turn to avoid it (much like DBA has fleeing troops turning when they meet a table side-edge)
Whatever you decide, I would very much like to participate in another event like this one.

Lovely armies, great fun and fought out in a friendly atmosphere. Always good to visit the Scimitars club…nice people, and well worth the drive. (Thanks to Colin, driver of our carpool South Korean chariot from Venta Belgarum 🙂).
We played five games each, never using the same army twice. Congrats to winner John Irwin, followed by Philip Donald and Kev Casey (all Scimitars members).
Thanks to all for a great day out. Loadsa funn….😊👍🏼
Managed to leave my record sheet behind at home, but from memory (and apologies if any of this is a work of fiction…..) my five games were:-
1. vs Neil M. I used War of the Worlds Martians against the defenders of London. Luckily my Large Tripods (as Dragons) showed up on turn 2, and launched into action. One was shot down by Vickers mg teams, but another trampled some Yeomany cavalry, while yet another managed to recoil the enemy commander into the Thames. Very lucky to survive the enemy artillery, but snatched a win by 10g to 8?).
2. Using Lord of the Rings ‘goodies’ against Mordor’s finest, led by Tony G. The enemy Nazgul rider (aerial hero) wiped out my giant eagle Gwahir (flyer) but was nobbled by a spell from Gandalf. Then Aragorn and companions (hero) advanced on the Mordor Mamukil (Behemoth) and a spell from Gandalf made it recoil through the enemy general and then flee. (12g-2 win?).
3. Riding my luck further, I was given Dorothy and Friends against the Wicked Witch of the West on the Oz board, playing Mark Johnson. The opposition manoeuvred around as I advanced, then Dorothy (hero), Scarecrow (Paladin) and Cowardly Lion (beast) attacked the enemy right. I think Dorothy got killed, but the Scarecrow killed the Witch for a lucky win (6g-4?.?).
4. After lunch I was allocated Sioux Alliance 1876 vs 7th Cavalry, under Kev C. . Crazy Horse and Moving Robe Woman (heroes) led my warriors (riders) across the Greasy Grass river on my right, while on my left the foot warriors (shooters) hid from the advance of gatlings (artillery) and US Infantry. Custer unheroically hid at the back, avoiding the spells of Sitting Bull (Magician). My mounted braves got the worst of the fight with the US Cavalry and Scouts (Kn and Riders), despite a few attempted spells by Sitting Bull, and Kev got a deserved and decisive win by 12 points to 2.
5. Last game, and back to the Mordor board, using the Forces of Mordor against Philip Donald. My Nazgûl strayed stupidly close to Gandalf, but survived the magical blast, to then attack enemy general Aragorn in a hero v hero clash…which I lost. Bye bye Nazgûl-rider… Scuffles in the marshes came to little*, but the Rohirrim, Aragorn and Gandalf then advanced to knock out the Mamukil, Goblins, Wolf-riders and others for a crushing defeat to Mordor (about 14 to 0 or maybe 2…😶 🎲🎲). * And forgetting that Gollum (water lurker) and Shelob (lurker) are on standby as the enemy advance into the marshes is extremely unwise!! Missed a trick, there …☺️
Great fun, fantastic games, fab opponents 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Thanks Pete!!
