Hi; Recently, I have been reading / gaming a ton of WW1 Eastern Front, and by chance, happened to snag a postcard from 1914 that mentions the battle of Tannenberg. I know that I could probably do a google translate thing and all that, but I would rather ask a fellow forum member, since it is wargame related. Here is the caption in the postcard: Schlacht bei Tannenberg.OsipereuBischer Landstrum vertreibit die Russenaus einer Orlschaft bei HohensteinAnd here is a scan of the postcard:  I think asking for someone to try and figure out the hand writing might be a bit much, but if anyone can help me out with the caption, it would be greatly appreciated. The message reads
"Dear ?Knäppchen

Give [your] sister Anna and Wilhelm Leopold my love. [Literally, "Greet sister Anna and Wilhelm Leopold from me."]
With much love. [Again, literally "And greetings to yourself."]
From your Papa"
"Orlschaft" in the caption had me confused until I tumbled to the fact that it is probably "Ortschaft".

Wow! Thank you all so much, I did not expect such a quick response nor to get the handwritten part.
Since I obviously scanned the postcard, I am going to add the English translation to the scan, frame the result and hang it in my game room.
This is so brilliant, thanks again!

Chris, Frustratingly, some of my annotations refuse to appear in the post. I assume "Knäppchen" is a nickname or pet name for the recipient. I can't decipher the next bit apart from "Deinen Wunsch", which is "your wish" or perhaps your wishes. I think too that the "Wunsch" may be the first part of a compound noun. So it might be something like, "in accordance with your wishes" or, more colloquially, "as you asked". I can't make out the verb, but it doesn't look like "schicken" - to send or "schreiben" - to write. Regards, Denis |

Interestingly, the battle took place in late August 1914 (26-30)
with a freshly produced commemoration card sent two months later.
From where it was sent is rather difficult to decipher.
Knäppchen = little clever one.

Thanks so much again everyone. It is going to be a while for me to get the smile off my face  I was surprised as well timurilank, that there was a postcard already printed about the battle. Having possession of this old postcard has me thinking of who wrote it, how old was the recipient, do they have relatives now?, etc.. I just love that pet name that "Papa" gives. Would be a great username for wargaming, too! |
