My dad came down for a long-postponed and much-awaited gaming day yesterday, and we ended up playing eight rounds of DBA. (And I finally got to put my most recent armies, the Mycenaeans and the Gasgans on the table!)
The first two games had the Mycenaeans (as Achaians) facing off against Sea Peoples. In the first game, Dad ended up having to garrison a city on the coast, which my littoral landing force promptly swooped down on and stormed in the first turn. There was then some pushing and shoving in the center, with my Blades against his Spears and light chariots, but I gained the victory after outflanking his Pylian pike block.
After that, we decided on a rematch with some different terrain. This time, Dad tried a littoral landing force of his own, aimed at my camp, with mine ending up in hot pursuit. This game actually saw my camp followers sally out to try to delay his attackers and let me forces catch up (which sort of worked, though my camp followers got chopped up by the Myrmidon warband.) I did eventually win this one by bagging most of the landing force.
For the third and fourth games, we switched things up and tried the Gasgans against the Hittites instead. I took the Gasgans, and in the first game I got to be on the defense, so I placed a bunch of difficult hills and woods to lurk in. Alas, my general got ambushed and surrounded by Hittite light troops while attempting to sneak between a couple of the hills to get at the Hittite camp, so that one was over quickly.
In my second attempt, the Gasgans were on offense and Dad declined to give me much terrain to work with, so I just lined up as best I could, hoping to hold off his chariots long enough to cause some casualties among his infantry. This sort of worked (I did get to quick kill a Pike with my Warband) but not well enough, as my Psiloi Pswarm just couldn't hold off his chariotry in the open.
We did one last Bronze Age game, and the Mycenaeans (as Trojans) defended against the Hittites. This mostly ended up with a big lineup in the open, and my Pikes and heavy chariots broke through the Trojan line - the game ended with the Trojan general being pinned up against the walls of his stronghold.
After that, we switched periods - I brought out my Mongol Conquest army, and Dad put together some Medieval Poles to face them. In the first game, Dad decided he really wanted a river, and between that and all the woods, the battlefield ended up a little cramped. I ended up luring his general way over to the edge of the table where he couldn't command much of the army, and gradually worked around the flanks with my light horse to pick off and surround some of his units. In the second game, we had a bit more of an open field, but I was able to get his Knights to come pursue my Light Horse until I could get them overlapped.
Finally, we moved over to the New World for one game of Aztecs versus Maya. Dad took the Aztecs, and was able to overwhelm me at the cost of a couple of disposable Hordes, with my Blade general coming off the worse against his.
We finished up with a quick game of Hordes of the Things, where my Hero-led multinational coalition of humans and dwarves defeated a nominally Orcish army that was light on orcs but heavy on trolls of all sizes. All in all, a fun day of gaming, and definitely an incentive to get my next army painted up!
