My memory cells don't function well these days, but wasn't there a DBA tournament at Vapnartak (York Wargames show) in the past? Or is my memory kaput? I can recall fantasy games there also (were they there in 2019 and 2020)? Mostly seem to be demo games these days. But do York Wargames Society offer space for g ames competitions? (I realise Vapnartak is just a one day show, and in 2020, quite a lot of traders and demo / participation games, all quite crowded together despite the show then being over several floors?

Hi Carl I don't think there has ever been a DBA competition at Vapnartak.
They used to be a DBM doubles competition some time ago but that stopped when (according to one of the players) the show organisers wanted too much money for the space they were allocated, so the competition moved elsewhere. I suspect the organisers can get more money per square foot from traders rather than give space over to competitions.
I have vague recollections of an ancients game played with 28mm figures and only about 6 elements a side, but not sure what that was. About the same time they had an X-wing competition, but nothing much else I can remember.
I must admit the things that stopped me from going was when there were no competitions to watch and they changed the bring and buy to one of these where you have to hire a table for a set period and try and sell the stuff yourself during that time. It may be easier for the organisers, but as a potential seller I didn't like it.
As you say the show now just seems to be loads of traders and demo/participation games. So if you don't actually need to see figures at the traders stands and you're not that into participation games, then once you've looked around the demos games that's it. So for me it no longer became worth the travel, but obviously it's still busy if you say it was crowded.

Like sheffmark, I can't recall a DBA competition at Vapnartak - although I may simply not have been paying attention. (Vapnartak usually follows hard on the heels of the Welsh Open and the latter usually takes precedence for me.)
There was a L'Art de la Guerre competition there in 2019 and again in 2020. I understand there are no competitions at all this year, but that the plan is for them to return in 2023.
The LADLAG crew's response has been to hire a hall and run their own competition on Vapnartak Eve.
