1) first of all I have to say by and large it’s working. As wargamers, people who understand complex rules and how to prevail in a conflict, gamers tend to “get it” and this gets them the models they want while still collecting VAT. That’s the good news. The rest of this is the bad news. 😅
2) some customers (a rare few) just absolutely don’t get it and don’t see the information about this plastered all over my website (see button image as an example). I recently got an order from a Spanish customer and when I advised of the workaround he was outraged and immediately brought a PayPal dispute. If he wants his money back, that’s fine, but I didn’t see why I should be charged the PayPal fee (which the greedy bastards keep even if the order is refunded) for his failure to pay attention. I explained this all to PayPal. Naturally they found in his favour and so I lost the PayPal fee and they charged me a “dispute fee” as well, so I’m out of pocket $30 because this customer can’t read.
3) the fees I pay for this are eye-watering. I lose the PayPal fee for the refunded amount and then ebay charges me a TEN PERCENT fee on top of that.
4) eBay’s international parcel system is absolute fu*king rubbish! I’ve had multiple packages disappear in their system and they are completely useless in getting information about the parcels, and accept no responsibility for their own shit service. Why should they? If the customer complains about nonreceipt, eBay can just decide in favour of the buyer and rob the seller to compensate for its own disgraceful ineptitude at parcel delivery.
5) even if none of the above were true, it’s a gigantic pain in the ass to put this all into place, extremely time consuming.
All of this is making me reevaluate whether I should still be selling to the UK and EU. Protectionism works, folks ! Meanwhile parcels from the UK and EU just sail right into the US, meaning even competition with foreign sellers in my own country, but completely uneven competition in the UK and EU. Why our government permits this uneven playing field, I have no idea. Have to give this all a think ….
BTW he has ruled out letting anyone sell them this side of the pond , "I’d lose 40% of the value of the figurines if I did that."
