“ How Medieval Cities Defended Themselves - Middle Ages”, the latest video offering from Kings and Generals, presents a number of interesting elements for conflicts within the Holy Roman Empire. Of particular interest is the construction and use of Landwehren to protect rural regions. (View at the 6-minute mark). The series of ramparts and ditches lay parallel to roadways, creating a barrier against hostile forces. Variations on this theme were used in the defence of 15th century Liege against Burgundy and further north during the civil conflicts in Gelderland (Netherlands). de-academic.com/dic.nsf/dewiki/826882
