...mind I'm lucky the Romans left or I'd have to go through immigration too.😁 Are you north of the border, then?? 😳🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 The old Roman border....Hadrian's wall.I live approx. 9 miles North of it and in easy reach of most of the excavated sites. You can still travel along the B3618 called the military road which is technically the old Roman road along the wall and still see parts of it or the ditching mounding showing where the wall stood. There are still some Roman sites (including forts) unexcavated such as Ebchester and Lanchester. What I do find of interesting is the consentrated siting of Roman garrisons in the Hexham area.Hexham was the original spa town for the garrison troops but became less popular when Chesters,Chollerford and Corbridge were built closer to the wall....all roughly behind the center of the wall.It seemed at some time there was a need to upgrade the speed and distribution of troops to the wall indicating some form of increased threat from the North? There are signs that modifications to the wall also took place where mile-forts were replaced by full size forts similar in size to Housteads. On the whole the whole area of the wall does give an indication that it was not always passive North or even South of the wall and that the Romans were possibly no more than an army of occupation for part or all of their stay.

Yep, and the further from Richborough you got the more it must’ve felt like the end of the known world / Ultime Thule or whatever.

Hep, and the further from Richborough you got the more it must’ve felt like the end of the known world / Ultime Thule or whatever. With the majority of Britain being wooded or fens at that time it makes you wonder how much "control" the Romans really had.The Wall was build on natural defensive positions with a natural choke hold of the Rivers behind it should it be breached. When the wall was breached in 367AD it was possibly on too larger scale or the defensive garrison strengths were to weak(as well as bribed) to cope with the invasion.

A quick note to Alton DBA players- Reminder :- - Alton St. George’s Day DBA Tournament will be in less than three weeks time, on 23rd April. - Format will once again be be ‘My Own Worst Enemy’, ie use your army in three rounds, play against it in three. - You will need to bring a fixed set of legal terrain for your army. If possible, also a written or printed list of the army composition and the fixed set of terrain items, for your opponent to consult when he uses your army.
Further nudges will follow, nearer the date.
