ALTON DBA ‘My Own Worst Enemy’ results Sixteen players at today’s Alton DBA, playing six rounds. After 48 games the player rankings, army brought and point scores were:- 1 Pete Duckworth, Samurai ……………..127 pts 2 Denis Grey, Thracians ……………………116 pts 3 Richard Pulley, Early Egyptians, …….113 pts 4 Colin O’Shea, Zanj Revolt………………..90 pts 5 Ian Pain, Spartacus ………………………..82 pts 6 Simon Wilson, Dacian + Sarmatians..74 pts 7 Paddy Myers, Later Hungarian………..74 pts 8 Phil Steele, Timurids………………………..72 pts 9 Mark Skelton, Alans…………………………70 pts 10 Lindon Paxton, War of the Roses……59 pts 11 John Saunders, Wu Chinese…………..58 pts 12 Bill MacGillivray, Neo-Elamite…………50 pts 13 Kev Casey, Gallic……………………………48 pts 14 Steve Etheridge, Golden Horde………44 pts 15 Stephen Finn, Arab Indian………………33 pts 16 Paul Clair, Anglo-Norman………………32 pts Congrats to the podium placed, and MANY THANKS to all for such an enjoyable day to run…..superb bunch of players!! Looked really good Martin. Sorry to not have been there. One question - do you have the statistics as to which was the winningest army on the day. Did any of the armies manage to go 6-0 on the day? Ah, no, Paddy….If you remember, I’m very low-tech-paper-and-pencil at Alton. 😎….’old school’, only just upgraded to paper from chalk and a slate 😂 If I find time I’ll look at the armies’ performances. I suspect each was a mixed bag of highs and lows. The top players eg won with and beat their own armies. Zanj was definitely doing well….I’ll try to check.

Samurai didn't, Thracians didn't, Early Egyptians didn't, Zanj didn't (drew their final game), Later Hungarian didn't, Timurids didn't, Gallic didn't, Golden Horde didn't, Arab Indian didn't and Anglo-Norman didn't.
Possibly the Elamites were a 6-0 army?

LOL! Nothing wrong with pencil & paper!
I’m just intrigued that Dennis came 2nd with Thracians, which if I read his AAR correctly were 1-0-5 while Colin came forth with the mighty Zanj who seemed to go 5-1-0. Two very different ways of selecting an army for this format!

Two very different ways of selecting an army for this format! Colin won all three games he played with his own army, but lost two of the games he played against it and the final game ended in a draw. I won only once with my own army, but got three wins against it. No very deep thought went into my choice of army. They were just the one I'd painted most recently. (In fact, I still have some options to finish.)

They look fantastic Dennis. A very well painted army! I’m on a Xyston binge at the moment. Spartans and Spanish done, Gauls on the painting table! Next up either Marian Romans, Thracians or LAP. Seeing your Thracians makes me think I should do them next.

Who won the “Thrower of Ones” award given I wasn’t there?

(In fact, I still have some options to finish.) You mean that was not your fiendishly cunning plan, Denis! There was I thinking you maintained colossal self-discipline, slaving away for weeks painting a beautiful army that you knew would be vulnerable at the Alton tournament in the hope of gaining easy victory after easy victory against it. What fortitude. Such stamina. All you needed was a lucky win when playing with it yourself and one out of three could be expected. This would give you four wins out of six at minimum and place you very nicely near the top of the table – even on the winner’s podium. Losing battles is OK if you win the war (did somebody say that?). Masterful strategy; makes mine seem infantile by comparison. But this was all reverie. I’m so disappointed. Deflated even. Was it just all about luck then? Colin

Who won the “Thrower of Ones” award given I wasn’t there? That was Paul Clair (who therefore got fifth choice of prize…we went 1,2,3,4 then from 16th upwards to 5th…poor ol’ Ian!!).

Hi all. A request came in about army efficiency in Alton DBA, so I consulted the laptop spreadsheet (or rather I spread sheets on top of my lap, and consulted them, Mr Lo-Tech….). Here are the armies and their game results. W = win, D = draw, L = lost, X = army arrived after start time, missed a game.
Dacian+Sarmatian ally - WWWWW L
Neo-Elamite - WWWWW L
Zanj Revolt - WWWW D L
Samurai - WWW D LL
Spartacus - WWW D LL
War of the Roses- WWW D LL
Wu Chinese - WWW LLL
Golden Horde - WWW LLL
Arab Indian - WWW LLL
Anglo-Norman- WW DD LL
Alans - WW LLLL
Timurids - WW X LLL
Later Hungarian- WW LLLL
Early Egyptian- WW LLLL
Thracians- W LLLL (+ X, but lost fill-in game)
Gallic- W LLLLL
So best armies were (possibly) ‘Dacian with Sarmatian Ally’ along side ‘Neo-Elamite’, closely followed by the dreaded Zanj.* Of the rest, the Gallic and Thracian armies had unluckiest days.
* which can only be cured with penicillin

If I hadn't managed to get the Thracians table-ready in time, my fiendishly cunning plan B was the IV/41 Early Swiss army, which I finished in June.

The honour of Ali Ibn Muhammad is at stake here! Colin

Colin was CORRECT….the dreaded Zanj were even more awesome than I thought (the results sheet for round 4 was found to have had the armies reversed…round 4 was a ‘use your opponent’s army’ round, so Simon W won with Zanj , not Dacians, as I had recorded).
Try again…
Here are the armies and their game results. W = win, D = draw, L = lost, X = army arrived after start time, missed a game.
Zanj Revolt - WWWWW D
Neo-Elamite - WWWWW L
Dacian+Sarmatian ally - WWWW LL

Later Hungarian- WW LLLL
Early Egyptian- WW LLLL
Thracians- W LLLL (+ X, but lost fill-in game)
Gallic- W LLLLL
So best armies were indeed the dreaded Zanj. Neo-Elamite and then Dacian with Sarmatian Ally were best of the rest.
