Hott Godiva on Saturday, at the Coventry Friends Meeting House, admirably run by Pete D. of the Scimitars.
Ten players attended, and we played four rounds. Having missed the note in/failed to read the paperwork, it came to me as something of a surprise that we used fixed terrain and the opponent’s army for the two afternoon games, though this was an excellent if unexpected part of the day.
Winner was Jane Williams, who brought her Ivor the Engine army - Blade general, a few hordes and a hero/paladin/rider combo…..and also Idris the Dragon.
Second was organiser Pete D..
My army was Terracotta Chinese, with three magicians, two beasts and eight hordes.
Game one I played Jane, and invaded. With six PIPs for her first roll, Idris the Dragon immediately showed up and started causing chaos in the Chinese ranks, killing the Emperor’s wives (Mg.) and a horde before eventually being forced to flee the field with some effective bespelling. Meanwhile the rest of the opposing army had moved to contact, and soon my casualties mounted, leading to a 4-12 defeat.
Game two was defending against a Dalek invasion, led by Stevie Andrews. Impassable terrain on my left and a town in my right channelled the Dalek force down the centre. Two Dalek airboats took turns to flee from magical attacks, but returning hordes and an inability to defeat his ‘blade’ line Daleks led to a 0-1 draw after a slow slog.
After lunch it was ‘use your opponent’s army’ time (…to my surprise).
Game three - I played Kev Casey, this time using his Oni Japanese army against the Chinese Terracotta Warriors. An outflanking move on our left towards the Chinese stronghold came to naught, as Kev moved more and more terracotta hordes to intercept it. Meanwhile on my right the Oni warbands scrapped successfully with the opposing terracotta beasts in a large village on the right flank, before turning their attention on the magicians in the enemy centre, and as time was called on the game, the final fluky dice roll sent the Chinese Emperor general off to meet his ancestors (9g-0 win).
Lastly, in game four Graham Sargeant took charge of the Chinese as I generalled his Evil Cultists on an invasion of China. My flyers flitted about a while before being swatted by the Chinese magicians, and though my behemoth trampled a couple of hordes an attempt by my hero general to shatter the terracotta beasts in a village went very much astray, as he was doubled and dispatched (13g-2 loss).
Two losses, one draw, one win…not a glorious display, but certainly an enjoyable day of face-to-face gaming in a congenial atmosphere. Thanks to Pete and my opponents for a fine day of dice rolling.
