the more i look at these the more I like them. my old brain is too tired for complexity. all I want to do is paint my minis make them look like something approaching an army (hence 10mm) and push them around the tabletop in a forlorn hope of trying to recreate masterstrokes of battle but at least having a good time so that my brain doesnt hurt at the end of it Having had another look, I’m very tempted by the option of using a grid (I also play ‘The Portable Wargame’ by Bob Cordery, which is grid based…usually solo. Simplicity and clarity are a very high priority for me, especially for solo gaming)... The only neg for me is possibly having to find extra figures for the double depth ‘units’, but that could easily be ignored and I could just revert to one element base on a 40x40 card sabot. Also would need to check on my terrain options…though cutting out extra felt profiles would be no problem. [ macsen’s (/Holly’s) 10mm dark age figures on 80mm frontage would look pretty damned awesome, too……].

Whilst I am ok with that I find that my “opponent” is a most devious chap and bares watching closely… 😉😂 Cheers, Geoff

[ macsen’s (/Holly’s) 10mm dark age figures on 80mm frontage would look pretty damned awesome, too……]. Well Martin, I’ve found and used 4 possible alternatives:- 1) If you have enough DBA bases for BBDBA, then you’ll have enough for a 12-element-a-side deep-base game. 2) If you have two armies of the same type (say a Roman civil war), you’ll be able to make one deep-base army. 3) I like to have ‘generic’ elements; for example, my 4Wb elements could be early Gauls, Germans, Galatians etc. Likewise 3Wb could be Ancient Britons, later Gauls, Dacians, and several others…a barbarian is a barbarian. Mixed deep-bases look fine; have a 4 figure DBA element in front and a 3 figure behind, and it’s a ‘solid’ unit. Reverse this with the 3 figure in front and the 4 figure behind and it’s a ‘fast’ unit. The rear rank is just for show. 4) Lastly, use any similar looking foot elements for the rear rank, where you can. I find that Ancient Spanish look very similar to auxiliary Polybian Italians, unless you look very closely at them (and even then it’s hard to tell with my poor painting skills! ).Having two Artillery models on a single 40 x 40mm deep-base looks good, but I find that two Elephants per 40 x 40mm deep-base is a bit too cramped, at least with Xyston Elephants. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to squeeze two Chariots onto a 40 x 40mm deep-base (which is a shame).

The good news is that having a mix of 40mm x 40mm and 80mm x 40mm based figures allows for a few permutations

Brilliant stevie!
Definitely needs to be added to the list of aids for the new (and not so new) players.
