I'm not sure how this is actually simpler. I would limit troops to... Knights Riders Spear Blades Warbands Bows Hordes Lt. Infantry You could add special rules for Phalanx (double deep spear counting as 1.5 elements) and perhaps Elephants. Some of these ideas were discussed for DBA 3. Joe Collins Inclined to agree with Joe - what started as a suggestion for simplicity suddenly added more and more chrome.

For inspiration from an actual simple version of DBA, don't forget the original ruleset from 1989, DBSA (de bellis societatis antiquorum)
I can't see them online anymore, but I do have a PDF restoration/recreation I made using the text which was available years ago, and a matching font used by typewriters of that period.
I think there was a scan of the original rules somewhere, which I used to 'restore' them. I can dig them out if anyone is interested.

Cheers Mark,
I did come across that link, but was browsing on my kindle, and it appeared to be a dead link. On my laptop now, and it is working fine. Bearing in mind that Phil and Sue have made the rules for DBA 1 freely available, and that these DBSA rules are already online, I was going to upload the copies I have, but can't seem to see any button for attachments. Is this a board-wide policy, or just people like me with a low post-count?

Fear not Derek...you are not being discriminated against. Too many people were uploading pictures to Fanaticus, which exceeded the storage capacity, so the attachment function has now been disabled (shame). But you can still display stuff if you uploaded it to another site first and then post the link here. I use imgbb.com/ which is free. To see how it’s done, go to fanaticus.boards.net/thread/3041/ , and click on “Quote” to see an example of how I displayed both a picture and a link.

Cheers Stevie.
I don't want to hijack your thread with other rules, so I'll post them in a new thread.

Welcome to Fanaticus dpd. Actually, without knowing it, you have inadvertently preempted a little project I’m currently working on...although I’ve used a completely different approach. (This is being playtested and should be ready for posting in about two weeks)... Dear stevie, how is your project doing? Is it possible to get the finished version somehow? I'm very interested in it.

Oh, thanks so much, stevie! They are located on the 2.2+ section of the forum, that's probably why they passed me by.

We have already done this and have a fully developed rule set: A Game of Knights & Knaves.
You are quite correct that the many troop types and odd names are the dead weight of DBX. But are fortunately totally unneeded.
Instead we have:
Light Foot +2 Medium Foot +3 Heavy Foot +4
Light Mounted +2 Medium Mounted +3
You then vary these types by Weapons some examples:
Blades +1 v. Foot; -1 v. Mounted (Cry Havoc v. Knights - Destroy on Equals; Retinue - gives +1 to Bow in side contact) Bows -1 v. Foot; +1 v. Mounted (Distance Shooting up to 3BW) Polearms (Lethal - +1 on Winning Score; Cry Havoc v. Knights; Retinue; Drive Off v. Mounted - Recoil on Equals) Spears (Shield Wall - +1 to Spears in side contact; Drive Off v. Mounted; Phalanx - +1 for Spear in Rear Support)
Knights +1 v. Mounted (upgraded Medium Mounted that get Shock - Destroy on More - v. all Foot entirely in Open; Pursue except Light Foot) Levy (Clumsy - 2 PIPs to move; Pursue all; deeper bases)
To represent the troops just mount figures equal to the Combat Factor. Deeper bases indicate Fast (so for 25mm 20mm bases = MA of 2BW, 30mm bases indicate MA of 3BW).
Well you get the basic idea.
The Basic Game can literally be taught to 8 year old's (I know I taught all my kids how to play) since all they have to do is count the figures on the bases - helps lots of adults too). But the Advanced Game allows unlimited expansion into as much historical detail as you'd like but retains DBA 3.0s elegance (and enhances it).
Already fully playtested and available on WargameVault.
