Agree Dave. Just because the government wants to get the economy back up and running, doesn't mean it's sensible for each individual, in all situations, possibly with their own health issues, to suddenly throw caution to the winds. On the other hand we can't constantly live our lives in fear of what might happen, so as you say, it's a matter of each person trying to be sensible dependant upon their own circumstances. Thanks. People do not realize how lucky they are, I live in a block of retirement flats, we have not had a case of Covid, but a single person coming in with it could wipe half of us out it if we were unlucky. This could well end up like a more deadly version of the flu, it might still be around in fifty (50) years. Be patient, do not rush to go to meetings or hold them, the next one might be your last, remember that. David Constable

Hello all.
I await the government announcement on lockdown easing with interest but not optimism! I am currently looking at contingency options and will get back to those who signed up for 10 July over the next few days - so please don't jump to any assumptions and delete the date from your diaries! In the meantime, support your local pub an get a few pints down!!
Cheers

Dear Gork, are we to be seen in public. I know I am of fine stature but some of you are best kept in dark areas. I still remember the looks from other tables of tourists in the pub when we were discussing if Alexander could really cross a deep river contested.

I regret that the Midland Open on 10 July cannot go ahead in its normal format. I have e-mailed all those who were signed up to propose a reduced event. Please let me know if you were signed up and do not receive the e-mail.
Kind regards,
Simon

Congratulations to Clan Myers as Martin and Patrick Myers (father and son respectively) came joint first at the Midland Open in Youlgrave yesterday.
The full results were as follows:
1 = Martin Myers (II/32a Later Carthaginian) 1 = Patrick Myers (II/76 Koguryo Korean) 3 Simon Wilson (II/52 Dacians with Sarmatian Allies) 4 Colin O'Shea (IV/82 French Ordonnance with Venetian allies) 5 Tom Whitehead (Greek Kyrean I/56a) 6 Mark Johnson (III/15 Tibetan) 7 Mark Skelton (IV/65 Wallachians with Polish allies) 8 Andy Wheeldon (II/32a Later Carthaginian) 9 Martin Smith (I/28 Sea Peoples) 10 Keith Murphy (1/58 Meroitic Kushite) 11 Baldie (III/54b Qaramita) 12 Phil Johnson (Late Roman Eastern with Pre-Islamic Arab allies)
In order to comply with COVID regulations, the 12 players were put in two remote fixed teams for the day. A bit different from usual but everyone seemed to have a good time and enjoy being back at a tournament.
Thanks to Gavin at Alternative Armies for donating prizes from his 15mm camp items range and to Sharon at the Farmyard Inn for providing an excellent ploughman's lunch.
I am planning to run another Bakewell tournament in late September/early October so watch this space.
Cheers
Simon

Thank you Simon, for running such a welcome and friendly tournament within the constantly changing social environment in which we find ourselves. You welcomed us into your home, literally for some, and locality and even arranged the weather. It was special to enjoy games with others and enjoy some banter in the sunshine.
I had some cracking games with my most recently painted army, the Later Carthaginians, II/32a, Cv(g), 2xEl, LH, 3xSp, 2x4Wb, 4Ax, 2xPs.
Luck swerved both ways against Tom’s Kyreneans, with it down to a final combat to decide it either way, which I won against the odds.
Civil war suffered a dearth of Pips on both sides, but my 2s and 3s against Andy’s 1s and 2s was enough for Hannibal and his light troops to take out the enemy’s light troops on one flank.
Martin’s Sea Peoples was a nip and tuck affair. Terrain and Pip shortage forced me into a cohesion strategy, whilst Martin manoeuvred everything into optimum heffalump trap order. Combat veered both ways and ended with a 4-3 victory.
Phil’s Late Imperial Romans with LPIA allies did everything right and had both of my flanks under much pressure. An elephant charge up the road turned the tide in the centre, being lucky to keep finding opponents to avoid artillery fire.
Finally Simon’s Dacians looked on in awe as their Sarmatian allies charged the Carthaginian spears, despite elephants and light horse on their flanks, and broke through. The resulting mess continued to go well for the Sarmatians for a well deserved 4-2 “fortune favours bold” win for Simon.
Looking forward to the next Tournament, which for me will not be the Northern, so, enjoy!

Thanks, Simon, for arranging and running the Midland so well, under prevailing uncertainties. Great day out (AND unexpectedly glorious weather!!).
Big congratulations to the duovirate of winners…Martin and Patrick. Well deserved 👍🏼, the sign of a successful DBA dynasty 🙃.
Plenty to talk about on the 3 1/2 hour run to northern Hants., admirably conducted by my Hittite chariot driver, Colin.
Cheers.

A big thank you to Simon for organising this - the first DBA tournament, I believe, since the current unpleasantness. Beautifully organised, with a nice lunch and gorgeous weather to boot. All this and five games in one day with a great bunch of gents - looking forward to the next one!

All Hail Simon! The pandemic may not be over but managing to successfully manoeuvre through the changing Covid regulations to run a DBA tournament is an achievement which we players are grateful for – it has been soooo long! Despite the gaming being on two sites and playing himself, he still left his group and checked on ours several times, even though we had our own competent leader (well done Mark and sorry for the 6-1 on your general). Where Simon leads, I hope others will feel that soon they will be able to follow. It may be that we are going to have to learn to live in a different world but one without DBA…
