In between painting projects, I decided to ‘restore’ the SYW collection. Restore is possibly incorrect, but the first step is to change their appearance from gloss to mat.
There are thirteen boxes full with Austrians, Prussians, French, an Allied Army for Germany and some Spanish. Spraying them will take some time as each box contains nearly 60 elements. However, when completed, photographing them in battle will no longer pose a problem as it did with their former glossy appearance.

Yes I need to do that for my Carolingians. I sprayed them with, what was supposed to be Matt varnish, but came out Satin at best, so having got a can of Windsor and Newton matt varnish (on Paul M's recommendation) that works a lot better and gives a true matt finish.
Still I'm sure people say that for full protection of your painting you spray gloss then matt over the top and the basis that if they start to look glossy again you know you need to re-coat.

Sheffmark,
Since the stop production of Dullcote I found an alternative at our local DIY store. The ‘Motip’ mat varnish gives an excellent result.

Thanks.
This also looks to be available online so I'll bear in mind for when the W&N has run out.

What an improvement. Austrians, Prussians, Allied Army of Germany and French are done. Tomorrow, the Ottoman Turks.
I am slowly developing an ‘itch’ to build a SYW Russian

This restoration is not complete until you've posted pretty pictures for us all to see. ;-)

Paul,
Yes, I intend to, but this will take some time. These were painted during a time when basing did not use grass tufts. And the collection is quite large.
