Pusan has fallen. Admiral Yi Sunsin is preparing the turtle ships to continue breaking the invading Nipponese supply lines. I, General Kwon Yul of Joseon, must prevent the enemy from entering Jeolla province, home to both our navy and our richest rice fields.
Kobayakawa Takakage has prepared to face me at Ichi. Ahead of a difficult hill behind his right wing he has deployed a line of battle, from the right are nobushi(4Bw), three units of samurai (4Bd) and three double ranks of ashigaru (3Pk). The general and more mounted samurai (both 3Cv) wait in reserve.
My deployment area has a difficult hill to the left, a small wood in the centre and more woods to the right. My hwacha (rocket Art) with double ranked pikemen (4Pk)to their left face down the gap between central woods and hill. On the right in the woods are skirmishers(Ps); on the left spreading up the hill are two units of archers (4Bw). My unit and two others of armoured cavalry, along with Jurchen cavalry (all 3Cv) wait behind, whilst I have placed two units of horse archers(LH) in column out right beyond the second wood.
The main heavy troops of the enemy advance and wheel towards my line. The extreme left wing ashigaru split off left and form line abreast heading towards my horse archers. The remaining ashigaru head for the gap between the two woods.
I advance our skirmishers to the front of the central wood. The hwacha fire to no effect at such long range.
The enemy’s left advance further towards the horse archers and a unit of central ashigaru break off to threaten the flank of my skirmishers. I back the horse archers off. The enemy samurai have advanced closer to my line leaving their nobushi behind because of the hill. I angle my extreme left archers to the right. This time with the hwacha supported at close range by two units of archers, the central unit of samurai are destroyed! (1-0).
The enemy ashigaru threatening my skirmishers now slip behind them into the central woods and threaten the flank of my hwacha. Meanwhile the remaining block of ashigaru now threaten the skirmishers head on. The archers on my left, with their left flank now exposed to unreturned fire from the nobushi, retire up the hill. My horse archers see their chance and race down the right flank of the field and head into space behind enemy lines and towards the enemy camp. I advance the Jurchen to threaten the enemy ashigaru in the woods.
A column of ashigaru breaks through the gap between the woods and now threaten the Jurchen covering the ashigaru in the woods. More ashigaru from the enemy left come to support the column. Enemy mounted retire to cover their camp. I send a unit of armoured cavalry off left around the hill and angle my archers nearest my pikemen, to support the hwacha fire, to no effect.
One unit of samurai charges the hwacha. Kobayakawa advances to the central wood edge. The ashigaru column engages the Jurchen, freeing the ashigaru in the wood to support the samurai. The rocketeers prove robust, but the Jurchen are recoiled.
I adjust my cavalry deployment to create space. My archers realign with the pikes. My armoured cavalry continue their journey around the hill. The hwacha fire into the woods and destroy the ashigaru threatening them from there. (2-0).
The samurai charge back into the hwacha. The remaining samurai line up with my pikemen, whilst the nobushi move in field to support them. Ashigaru close in on two sides of the Jurchen, whilst more move through the woods to support the samurai assault. This time the rocketeers are slaughtered and the Jurchen cavalry are also destroyed. (2-2).
I charge into the victorious samurai, whilst my armoured cavalry on the left, having rounded the hill, charge into the nobushi flank. My horse archers turn in field to threaten the rear of the ashigaru pinning my skirmishers. The samurai force me to recoil, but the nobushi are destroyed (3-2).
Kobayakawa moves to threaten my victorious cavalry. The remaining ashigaru out on the enemy left now turn back to counter my horse archers. My archers next to the pikes force Kobayakawa to retire. I re-engage the samurai and my pikemen advance supported by archers into the remaining samurai. I am recoiled once more, but the pikes are successful. (4-2). The field is ours. A rare victory on land. Will it be enough to deny food for the enemy long enough for Admiral Yi and our Ming allies to drive the invaders out?
A fun game, I hope I have done it justice. The terrain and lack of early PIPs giving me no choice but to rely on it, made for a good game.
